This information was made public daring the early port of the present week and there is no question bnt what it is one of the best pieces of news that has been given out to Tintie operators in s score or more years. Tintie mines have been shipping heavily throughout the present year bnt with the new rate in effect we caa no doubt expect the district to doable its tonnage. The reduction which has just been announced and which will be effective next week amounts to about 30 per cent and it will dip ap proximately $1.00 per ton from ; the average freight charges on local ores. This voluntary and joint action on the part of the Union Pacific system and the Denver ft Bio Grande Bail-roa-d which waa taken at a recent conference of the freight anthontieg undoubtedly marks the advent of greater prosperity for not only the Tintie District bnt the entire state and in fact the whole intennountain country, as similar redactions have been announced on California and Nevada ores shipped to Utah points.. While Tintie . mining men. are naturally thankful to the railroad companies they do not look upon this reduction as a benefieient act, but rather as a late application of justice' to a district that baa long been struggling under the bonds of railway slavery. Tintie has, throughout its history; suffered because of highly. discriminatory rates on its ores. Dea-pits such a tremendous handicap our mines have enjoyed some measure of prosperity. Cedrols Uttalhfical 1 bad fail fifty - rates were pot into effect many yean ago and while they were perhaps tow enough to take the business away from the ox teams of the pioneer days they were not sufficiently low to lend much encouragement to mining. Such rates should never have been allowed to stand all these yean because during hat time Tintie has been moving ahead by leaps and bounds and instead of shipping a few carloads of ore each week our mines are moving trainloads of ore daily. Even with the substantial reduction which has just been granted, Tintie mines will still be paying rates considerably higher them those prevailing in such favored localities aa Bingham and Park City, where the mines are considerably closer to tha smelters. Large as the reduction is it is nothing more than a step toward lifting a burdensome handicap that has worked to the disadvantage of Tintie since the earliest days of railroading in Utah. While the mining companies of this district will perhaps derive the greatest benefits from it will be a wonderful stimulus to smelting as it will mean the use of the fail .. . complement of furnaces, the operation of the plants at more nearly their capacity and greater efficiency all around. It is a step toward bringing the mining industry of the west bade to prewar conditions and many of the Utah operators fed that it will lead to opening of new mines and the working of many properties which are now dosed. The roads concerned in the reduc-- ' tion made formal 'application to .the Utah public utilities commission for permission to shorten the customary legal notice period of the proposed change and the power to make the new rates . effective on July 10th. KB This action of the railroad companies was taken after a most careful investigation and in the belief that a tower freight rate from the numerous properties of the Untie District to the smelters will be productive not only of an increased output from the mines which are now producing but that it will enable the profitable operation of many mines which have been dosed down since the general mining slump following the war. In tiie minds of railroad men the opinion is definitely settled that the contemplated towering of freight 'tariffs will not only be welcomed by all the interests engaged in the operation of mines, nulls and smelters, bnt will be equally agreeable to business interests in general, because of its direct and almost immediate effect in augmenting the traying power of many individuals. From Tintie District, including Silver City, Mammoth, Eureka and other shipping points in the district: Iron ore Seduced from $1.50 per ton to $1 per ton. ' Ore and concentrates Value $30 per ton, reduced from $1.30 to $1; value $5 per ton, from $1.40 to $1; value $10 per ton, from $1.60 to $1; ' value $15 per ton, from $120 to $L25; value $20 per ton, from $240 to $L2; value $30 per ton, from $3.10 to $L50; - value $40 per ton, from $3.10 to $L75; value $50 per ton, from $3.10 to $2; value $60 per ton, from $340 to $2.25; value $70 per ton, from $340 to $240; value $80 per ton, from $340 to $2.75; value $90 per ton, from $340 to $3; value $100 per ton, from $340 to $345. There are no changes in the schedule of ore of more than $100 per ton value. As a matter of fact, much of the ore from the Untie District is of a value not to exceed $50 per ton.
