Show U of U hosts 1st annual American Indian Film Festival By Charity Yellowhair-Gilbert Guernillera In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, the 1st Annual American Indian Film Festival was held Nov. 1 through Nov. 3 at the Union Theater. To make the film festival happen, Utah Education Network (UEN) partnered with the American Indian Teacher Education Collaboration (AITEO), the Utah Division of Indian Affairs (UDIA) and the American Indian Resource Center (AIRC). “The purpose behind the film festival was to bring awareness to students and the community about American Indian Heritage Month,” says Ceceilia Tso, AITEC Coordinator. Every night of the festival, about 20 people filled the theater. The first film screened at the event was a documentaty called, Trudel/. The documentaty is about musician/ poet/activist, John Trudell. The film provides much footage of Trudell's life while he was the leader of the American Indian Movement (AIM) and his life after. Trudell has suffered through many hardships while representing what he believes in. From activism to poetry, Trudell has affected many lives. The film includes interviews with TrudelPs friends Kris Kristofferson and Robert Redford, to name a few. Heather Rae directed the film. The second film, Aboriginal Architecture, Living Architecture tells of how Native atchitects incorporate their culture within their designs. Seven different tribes are represented in the film: Pueblo, Mohawk, Inuit, Crow, Navajo Coast Salish and Haida. Also, Native American architects tell of how they incorporate their native designs with contemporaty att. In the documentary, a Haida designer stated, “There needs to be more knowledge out there about our own ancient architecture, and we need to learn about it, and designers and architects need to learn about it so that they can revive that ancient craft.” Paul M. Rickard directed the film. The third film, Looking Toward Home, is a film about Indians living in cities. Around the 1950s, the : Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) started a voluntary Urban Indian Relocation Program. Indians could volunteer to be relocated to metropolitan cities around the country. During the transition, many Native Americans strugeled to be away from their reservations, many went back to their homeland and many stayed. This film explores the lives of those who were born and raised in metropolitan cities, how they keep their cultural values while living in urban areas and the present day Native American community in cities across the country. Dale -Kruzic directed the film. For Native American Heritage Month, UEN-TV on channel 9 will be showing Native American films daily and Native Reports every Saturday at 7 p.m. A different movie will be shown every night. “To check for listings, visit wwwuen:0tg; UEN and their current partners. plan on putting together a planning committee for next year's film festival. Para poder hacer este evento una realidad el canal de Utah Education Network (UEN) se junto con la Colaboración Educacional pata instructores nativo-Americanos (AITEC*), la división de asuntos para Indios Nativos (UDIA?), y el centro de recursos para Indio-Americanos (AIRC*). “ El propósito del festival era de hacer crecer el conocimiento del la comunidad hacia los Americano-Nativos y sobre el mes de patrimonio. ” Dijo Ceceilia Tso, coordinadora de AITEC. Cada noche del festival, mas o menos 20 personas estaban presentes en el teatro para ver estas películas de Americanos-Nativos. La primera función se llamo Trudell . Se trata de el músico, poeta, activista , John Trudell. La película provee un visto a la vida de el cuando eta activista y líder del movimiento de Nativo-Ametricanos (AIM*) y también de su vida después. Trudell ha sufrido bastante en su vida con muchos obstáculos en la lucha por defender a sus creencias. De activismo a poesía, Trudell ha impactado muchas vidas. La película incluye entrevistas con algunos de sus amigos incluyendo a Kris Kristofferson y a Robert Redford, para nombrar algunos. Fue dirigada por Heather Rae. La segunda función lleva el nombre de Arquitectura Aboriginal, Arquitectura con Vida (Aboriginal Architecture, Living Architecture). Esta habla sobre como unos arquitectos incorporan su cultura en sus diseños. Siete diferentes naciones, están representadas en esta película; Pueblo, Mohawk, Inuit, Crow, Navajo, Coast Salish y Haid. Tambien habla sobre como sus diseños cultural son implementados en el arte contemporáneo. En el documental, un diseñador comenta “tiene que haber mas conocimiento sobre nuestra arquitectura antigua, necesitamos aprender sobre ello, y aprender como revivir esta antigua practica.” Paul M. Rickard* fue director. La tercera función: Mirando hacia casa (Looking toward home), se trata de Nativo-Americanos viviendo en ciudades. En la década de los 1950, la Agencia de Asuntos para Nativo-Americanos (BLA*) comenzó un programa voluntario de traslado urbano para Nativo-Ámericanos. En este tiempo, Nativos podían irse voluntariamente a vivir en ciudades metropolitanas alrededor del país. Durante la transición, muchos Nativos luchan con dejat se reservaciones, muchos regresaron a sus tierras, per muchos también, se quedaron. Esta película, explora las vidas de aquellos quienes nacieron y crecieron en ciudades metropolitanas y de cómo mantienen sus taíces y valores culturales en áreas urbanas, y las comunidades Nativas de hoy a lo largo del país. Esta película fue dirigida por Dale Kruzic. Durante el mes del patrimonio Nativo-Americano, UEN en el canal 9 estará mostrando películas Nativo-Americanas y dando reportes los Sábados a las 7pm.
