It was an abnormally early hour for a Saturday and for over 100 children in need - ages of about 3 years old to teens each meeting a "Santa's Helper" for the day who would be their own escort on a fun adventure! "Sometimes Santa needs a little help from those of us who care about children" was posted on an invitation to the 1st responders from the many areas of law enforcement from the F.O.P. This year was the "biggest ever" stated Bob Lucking, President of the F.O.P. members from the Park City Police Department. Summit County Sheriff's officers and staff, Heber City Police, Wasatch County Sheriff's officers and staff, Utah Highway Patrol, ICE, US Forrest Service, State Parks, Kamas Police, FBI, Bountiful Police, Salt Lake Police, Harrisville Police, were represented, each bringing their patrol cars to give the children the ride they had been anticipating since they were notified that they could "Shop with a Cop". The event began at the Yarrow, who donated breakfast for the many participants, then all climbed into the vehicles which could soon be identified by their colorful lights and loud sirens, which most of the children soon learned how to operate themselves with the help of their host. The parade from the Yarrow to WalMart's was exciting alone! This year was special as Prudential Real Estate Staff, along with Frontier Community Bank workers, donated the money they would have spent on Christmas Parties for the companies. They decided to do something different and worthwhile this year. "We always have a huge party at the Stein, and this year decided to donate these funds towards a good cause "Shop with a Cop"! This is better than a party any day," she said with tears coming freely to her eyes. "It has already been rewarding!" He was hanging on to the "Big Red Fire Truck" as it came around the corner from Coalville's Main Street. It didn't take long before the children were lined up to talk to Santa and tell him their wishes! They were then treated to enjoy consisting of candy and an orange to take home. The weather was great, and Santa enjoyed his first ride on the big new ladder truck! Merlyn a Johnson, Coalivlle Lion since 1964, told how in the 1970's children gathered around the front of the old Dearden building with a tree, rug and chair for Santa, and he handed each child homemade treats including puffed rice balls made by the hundreds! Before the Lion's Club helped with CONTINUED ON PAGE than the goal - and more than 100 children were recipients of this event. Shoppers within Wal-Mart also got in the spirit of giving, and several customers, after they checked out their own parcels, brought money to Bob Lucking to help out the children, too. The F.O.P. President said that there already had been several donate to this cause and it had only been about 30 minutes into the shopping spree. Many of the children chose gifts not only for themselves, but for each and every member of their family. One young man had decided to support a "sub for Santa" he heard about in school - and that is what he spent his money on!
