bend VI MOUNDED john minson M inson proprietor of stole toie at dividend and manager of north standard ang co jesus mexican miner formerly emp employed loed as a iliner babber I 1 john superintendent of the standard mine and L P peterson who was employed in manson s pool ball hall at dividend were shot to death and john manson proprietor of the manson stores and manager ot of the north standard mining company and jesus fernan dez an employee ot of the standard were seriously wounded shortly after eleven 0 clock on wednesday night when four armed mexicans made an attempt to rob the store the mexicans W wearing ablat ear n g mackso masks reached the store a at t about the time ime preparations were being made to close the place just the door they encountered tamen twomey who were commanded to hold up their hands and who were hurriedly forced back into the building As soon as they entered the place they corn com banded john manson and others to hold up their hands and all corn com plied realizing an attempt was being made to rob the store those who were in the place at that time were john manson L P peterson oscar bloom and claire webber ebber one of the bandits who seemed to be taking the lead told manson to hand over his money and the store proprietor seeking to gain time informed the man that he had nothing except what was in the sate safe and that the man who had the corn com was in eureka about this time and before the hold ups had made any effort to search those who were in the building or to open the cash register or safe john wester dahl chanced to be passing the place and dropped in to get a cigar As he stepped inside the door he was told to put his hands sands up at first the mine superintendent hesitated thinking the whole affair a joke but when told by his friends that a hold up was taking place be he prompt ly raised his hands jestingly stating that he guessed it was all right as he had no money the next step was to force man son back into the main room of his store building one of the mexicans following him and keeping the store keeper covered with a gun the room in which the safe was located Is just north of the soft drink par lor for where all were lined up by the bandits and at this time it was dark in the main store room when manson was making his way toward the sate safe the man who had him covered evidently got excited and feared that manson would be able to reach a gun hence the bandit started shooting he tired fired three times at close range and manson grappled with him before falling to the floor and eyen even after being wounded he managed to tear off the mans man s mask it seems that this shooting in the dark room adjoining the one in which peterson bloom fernandez and webber were stand ing with their hands up and guarded by the other mexicans started the other bandits to shooting it Is quite evident that they tried to get everyone la in the place mr wester dahl was shot through the left side of the head and by the man who had just wounded manson and the same man Is credited with shooting peter son through the stomach wester dahl was almost instantly killed while peterson lived tor for some minutes and even tried to make his way to his home which is but a short distance from the store fernandez who at one time worked for manson as a barber and who recently has been employed at the tintic gintic standard mine was shot lit fit the mouth ane bullet lodging in the back of his head lie ile Is a dexl can caw bloom says bullets were hitting ca close ose to him but in the excitement be he saved himself by dropping to the floor webber who la Is a Salt lake man and who was at the ca camp p of dividend on a visit Is thought to have escaped in a like manner following the shooting the dext cans backed out of the place and were soon lost in the darkness 0 john mansons wound Is IN ot IOUs john M manson ansons s wound is not serious the bullet from a 45 caliber gun entered his left arm just below the shoulder and lodged in the flesh of the back near the shoulder blade no bones were shattered and recovery ought to be rapid mr manson was sent to the provo hospital at an early hour Thurs thurida da morning his family lives at provo and before being placed in an automobile which took him to the train he talked with mrs man son over the phone and assured her that he was not seriously hurt mr manson said that when he was forced into the other room be he jully ully intended to open the sate safe and turn over what money it contained which was not a large sum he ile reached to switch on the lights and the man standing over him with the gun no doubt suspected that he was re reaching achinK tor for a weapon v t 0 drs laker and howell summoned drs laker and howell were sum boned from eureka within a few minutes after the shooting when they arrived peterson had passed away manson was given a attention en n and fernandez s wound was a also so dressed 0 expected to get roll money the mexican holdups no doubt ex pecked to gt the money which was required to pay oft off the large force I 1 employed at the tintic Stan standard dayd mine the of each month is a pay day and the holdup was car ried out on the ath mr manson has always cashed the checks for the mining company sending out for or enough currency and silver to pay the men off the amount required runs into the thousands he says it has not been his custom to have such a large sum on hand at his dividend store mr manson a other store is in eureka many shots fired it is thought that a total of about eighteen shots were fired by the mexicans and all within a few seconds of time twelve empty shells from guns 0 45 and 32 calibre were picked up in the build ing having been ejected by auto matic matle pistols bullet holes in the floor and at points on the wall quite near the floor indicate that efforts were made to kill those who dropped to the floor for the purpose of escaping the fire 0 john john was born in Corn asas wasa finland 46 years ago and spent the greater part of his life in the mining camps of the west it was more than twenty five years ago that he came to the united states he worked in idaho and ils his first employment in utah was in Bl agliam but he soon changed his residence to the district he ile was a capable miner and iad had no difficulty in holding cespon sible positions at the local mines it was in 1907 that mr wester dahl went to work for E J at the tintie standard property which at that time was in the pros hect stage it was bis his work that iad had much to do with bringing this property into the bonanza class ie he had faith in 10 the ground right from the start and when the standard company was passing through financial troubles and great difficulty was experienced in raising money tor for the continuation of the development work mr took stock tor for his labor and got some of his friends to do the same mrs operated a board ing house at the mine and nobly assisted her husband in the uphill continued on pae 4 double killing during attempt to hold up east tintic gintic store continued from page 1 I tight fight which was finally crowned with success when the tintic gintic standard made into a bonanza their holdings became very valuable and the family acquired considerable wealth not only did mr wester dahl retain his holdings in the tin tic ever since the first ore was en countered had a knowledge of the mine which is not possessed by any other individual first of all his death effects his family a wife and two daughters and they have the sincere sympathy of everyone in tin tic and next in line it Is 1 about as bevere a blow to manager and other officers of the mine ordinarily there is no man so im to an undertaking that he cannot be replaced but the opera uon tion of the Standard will not move along as smoothly with some one else in the position which mr air has held tor for so many years there will be an entirely dit dif terent ferent feeling at the little camp of dividend john big in frame and with a heart so large that it was away out of proportion to his ms missive sive body will be missed and mourned in he was of foreign birth but a more loyal american never lived and when be he von ron his way to the top after more than his share of hardships hun deeds of friends rejoiced and these friends now mourn the fate that swept him out life in such a cruel and unexpected manner mrs and one daughter are living at dividend at the present time and the other daughter has been attending rowland hall in salt lake 0 be he was en route to his home at seventh east street the salt lake man Is a butcher 0 systematic se uch stalled at 7 once nee within a few minutes after the shooting deputy sheriff jack green of dividend was on the job he deputized a number of people and sent them out in search of the cans who were responsible tor for the crime and then communicated with the officers at eureka and with the sheriff sheriffs s office at provo sheriff dan martin and city marshal dan cronin armed a number of men and placed them in such a manner that every avenue leading to eureka and out of the tintic gintic district on the west could be guarded sheriff I 1 john boyd of provo got in touch rith peace officers in every utah county town and picking up halt half a dozen deputies drove through to the tintic gintic standard mine where he took charge of the search bunk houses occupied by mexicans were com plemely searched and the quarters of various mexicans in eureka were visited by our local officers every mexican resident in the district was questioned and made to give an ac count of himself but the only clues found were of a very meagre nature 0 manager Ilu riles to stan daice dat d mine aline the first train out from salt lake following the shob sh otting ting brought manager E 10 J of the standard company who was anxious to place his entire organization at the disposal of the officers R ho were conducting the search for the four bandits manager was also desirous of being of service to the family of mr air who in addition to being his mine was a very close friend the death of mr deeply at fectea mr and it also shocked every other officer of the company one of whom said this Is horrible john wester dahl was one of the finest men I 1 lever ever knew no man in utah had a better reputation for honesty and he was respected to the utmost by everyone with whom he came in con tact I 1 have known him tor for many years he has been with the standard from its inception and stood by the property through ad hersity and success giving bounel fully of his mining knowledge and capacity for leadership and its cause 0 mexicans lie being held by officers Offic of heel ets s one mexican resident of eureka is being held as a suspect and seven other mexicans who have been mak ing their home in east tintic gintic have also been locked up some of the suspects taken into custody at divi bend and sent to the county jail at provo were employees ot of the tintic gintic standard and others are members of a section crew for the goshen valley ry having their headquarters at miller millers s ranch a little more than a mile from the mine it is stated that there is as yet no real evidence against them but jn some instances they tell conflicting stories the report that fernandez the wounded mexican had confessed is apparently without foundation but the stories which fernandez has told don t ring very true and some of the of officers figers are inclined to believe that he knows more than he Is telling tel llna it he was mixed up in the affair he certainly played in hard luck when he stopped a bullet in bis his mouth his injury is a very serious one the officers of utah and juab counties are quite certain that the men who handled the job never left the district and the more they dig into the matter the moie con vinced they are that the attempted robbery and the murders were the work rork of some one rho ho either lived at dividend or who was entirely en tirel familiar with the manner in which the mine pay roll was handled ao chance of bandits leaving sheriff dan martin took a number of deputies and covered the eastern end of this county going as tar far as nephi at the county seat he found the people pretty well stirred up on account of 0 the crime and a
