Show Vol. 80 No. 36 INSIDE THE NEWS THIS WEEK Friday, September 4, 2009 S.E.R.T. officers deployed…Negotiations successful SCN Editor Attention was turned to conversation between the Summit County Dispatch center and a complaint from someone reporting a suicidal 27 year old male, Christopher Cheney, who was located at a remote cabin in the Pine Mountain area of Summit County. Cheney called on a phone from there to his family, threatening to set fire to the cabin he was in and take his own life. He also related threats against any law enforcement officers who may respond to where he was. Dispatch immediately alerted authorities, and the Summit County Emergency Response Team (SERT) was deployed as well as hostage negotiators. Eight miles east of Oakley, is a private cabin site with several remote cabins, used for summer homes for the most part. The cabin Cheney was in was located up the road in this summer home subdivision, and was not an easy one to locate or see from the bottom of the hill. Emergency operations were carefully executed, being careful not to alarm the man. Capt. David Booth handled the situation carefully and professionally, organizing the approach to the cabin by SERT team members from Wasatch Back so as to be able to surround the area without raising alarm within the cabin. Communication was made with Cheney, and he was persuaded to surrender peacefully to law enforcement by 5:30 p.m. - 5-1/2 hours from Kids at The South Summit Schools are all settled down for Studying! …more on Page B2 Summit Today H87 L53 Isolated T-Storms The exit out of the cabin entrance the first phone call. Officers were able to bring Cheney in and book him into the Summit County Jail for misdemeanor crimes which included “Threatening with a dangerous weapon during a fight or quarrel, and possession of a deadly weapon with the intent to assault.” The SERT‘s mission to provide requesting agencies with a highly trained and dedicated field force available on short notice for many situations where a cohesive and disciplined unit of law enforcement officers is critical to the success of their mission. The Wasatch Back SERT was organized following the Marion incident in 1988, under the direction of Commissioner Bodrero. They trained with SWAT teams from the Utah Department of Corrections, the Salt Lake City Police Department, and the Provo Police Department, and completed a sniper course taught by the United States Marine Corp. SERT has proven to be a valuable resource to the Department of Public Safety. They are trained specifically in areas such as needed on Monday’s incident, with men and women from the Wasatch Back area who are ready to who was on one of the cots, being attacked by the bear. There they stopped to visit the area called Rock Creek Ranch, where he spent many of his youthful days growing up. His family wanted to hear about his experiences there growing up, so planned a trip which led them to river mile 53.5 in the canyon and to see the ranch first-hand. On the last evening of their trip, Aug. 27, at around 6 p.m. or so, a black bear came into their camp. One of the grandsons - Riley, had a gun and fired a warning shot into the air and the bear ran up a nearby hillside and out of view of the campers. They all nestled for some rest before their hike out the next day, some sleeping on cots and some inside tents. At about 12:30 a.m. – just after all had finally gotten to sleep, the bear returned (Aug. 28). The family awoke to find their grandfather and father Police are asking for help in locating a missing man Douglas Todd Nelson, of Oakley.
