Show Page 2 Thursday, April 12, 2012 The Gunnison Valley Gazette I'm Just Saying... by JANIS SAURIC I thought I knew all about Sanpete County. My mom was born and raised in Ephraim. My dad grew up in Centerfield. My grandparents were originally from Fountain Green. My great grandma owned a furniture store there where she raised four daughters without a husband. My grandpa roamed the West Hills of Fountain Green and even took supplies to a band of outlaws who hid there—or so the story goes. My aunt lived in Manti. She never learned to drive so when we travelled to Ephraim to visit my grandma we al- ways stopped and got her and my cousins. We frequently stopped at the Dairy Queen there and got a dilly bar too. I loved to drive by the Manti Temple. In those days you could drive right through a tunnel built through the building. Don't we all have some relative who originated in Spring City? I've listened to so many stories about pioneer settlers there. The only time I went there as a girl was to a wedding shower of my future aunt. That was my first shower and I felt very grown up to be included with the adult relatives. I had friends in Axtell, Christianburg, Fayette, and Mayfield. I have ridden my bike there to see them, ridden the bus after school to play there, and explored the towns. I've driven through Fairview many times to and from somewhere and it is an entrance to the Skyline Drive. My dad loved the mountains so you can bet he took his little family there. I remember Mount Pleasant as the home of Wasatch Academy. Marsha Overfeldt went to school there. I can't tell you how glamorous that seemed to me. Boarding school, right here in Sanpete. I knew Moroni as the place where the nation's turkeys were raised, but it was also a town where some of my dad's Allred cousins lived. Well, actually I think their last name was Blackham. I rode through Sterling to get to Manti and it was also the gateway to Palisades. Is it true that some house there had a taxidermy bobcat on their porch or have I dreamt that one up? I heard of Wales and Ches- ter and Indianola and Milburn. As a grown up not living in Sanpete, I've met other adults who were each raised in one of those small towns. I believe there is good stock in Sanpete. People from Scandinavia and transplants, perhaps generations ago, from other places. Life isn't always easy in Sanpete. There is always work to do, and most people don't get rich. At least not monetarily, but you can't discount the riches of the earth, the lifestyle, the associations and the values that exist in Sanpete. I'm familiar with much of Sanpete. But where the heck is Jerusalem, Sanpete County, Utah or Spearmint, Sanpete County, Utah? I thought I knew Sanpete! Janis welcomes your comments. You can email her at janissauric@live. corn Why I Relay The Gazette will be running a series of articles over the next couple of months titled "Why I Relay." These are the very personal and heartfelt stories of those who have participated in the Relay for Life in the past and why they choose to do it. I Relay because cancer can strike anyone, even those with no family history of the disease. As some of you know, Gunnison Valley Senior Citizens (The Recycled Teenagers) by REED ROBERTS The March social was a great Irish success. The food was spectacular and Mark and Abby Lyons did us a great Irish program. Mike McMahon (our Vice-President) took a few minutes to explain how he and Judy came to live in our Valley, we are sure glad they did. This month is Easter, so we are planning our monthly social around an Easter/ Spring theme, even though Easter is over. The date is Monday April 16th, at 6 p.m., the location will be the Gunnison City Hall. We will be serving chicken salad sandwiches in a croissant bun with potato salad and potluck salads and desserts. Bring your dishes, your senior neighbors, a potluck salad or dessert, and lots of spring spirit. There will be a short program following the dinner. Don't forget to mark your calendars, call and invite your friends, and plan on coming to the Gunnison City Hall for a fun filled evening. Remember, next Monday, April 16th at 6 p.m. Getting out to the Senior Citizen socials is just like fishing, you will get hooked. First Birthday Krue Jason Lewis three and a half years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to have a mastectomy. I'm alive today because of early detection. Not everyone has been as lucky as I have been. To those who have had to travel and get treatments and who have been very sick, my heart goes out to them. Cancer has impacted my life again very recently with the diagnosis of my dear friend Cheryl. She is battling stage 4 metastatic esophageal cancer. The doctor told her that he didn't give her even a one percent chance, he just said incurable and he hopes for Cheryl to beat the cancer. She has a young family and prays that she will be able to be there as they grow up. This is why I Relay. Because every dollar people raise brings the American Cancer Society one step closer to defeating cancer. Relay for Life brings together millions of people to raise money to help prevent cancer, save lives and diminish suffering from the disease. When someone asks you to give some money for the cure of cancer, I hope and pray you open your heart and give generously. Please come to the Relay for Life because when you do your life will be changed forever. -Evelyn Wagstaff Singles 30 and over Fireside A special fireside for singles, ages 30 and over will be held Sunday, May 20 at 7 p.m. in the Ephraim LDS South Chapel, 751 South 100 East.
