Show Thursday, September 27 2007 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 5 Hansen family takes home Manti DUP to honor top honors from state fair pioneer families After many months of hard work, the Kirk Hansen family headed to the State Fair in Salt Lake City with their heifers and steers. Each of these animals require about three hundred hours of work. One third of this time is dealing with nutrient and feeding. Each animal is intensely fed for proper weight and perfect fat cover. These animals are washed and blown daily with hair treatments to stimulate hair growth and clipped and kept fit. The steers and heifers are trained to walk and stand properly. The first week of the fair is the Angus Show in which Tyrell and his Heifer Exar Blackbird won Reserve Champion Junior Angus Heifer. Tyrell also won Junior Angus Showmanship. Later in the week, the Steer Show began with Showmanship, which Tyrell, Chelsea and Madison participated in with Tyrell winning the Senior FFA Division. Chelsea placed 2nd in the Senior Division and Madison in the Junior Division. Showmanship is a contest where they are judged on how well the child and the steer demonstrate proper show technique. The following day was the Market Steer Show which included fifty high quality show steers. In this event Chelsea won Reserve Champion Steer of the Utah State Fair. This is the fourth year in a row that either Tyrell or Chelsea has won Reserve or Grand Champion of the Utah State Fair. Chelsea Hansen with her Reserve Champion Steer.
