At 9 am on a Monday morning, the children of our friends and classmates, the cousins and grandchildren of neighbors, filed through the doors of Gunnison Valley Middle School. Separated into age groups, Discovering Music participants (ages 4-7) began learning the basic tenets of music through songs and movement, and Creative Arts Camp participants (ages 8-16), after an initial movement-oriented warm-up, separated into three groups of twelve for their morning rotation of music and movement, creative writing, and visual arts classes. The children spent the morning trying to see the world in new ways, turning trash into art, painting music and movement onto murals, creating mythical creatures and topsy-turvy habitats in poetry and stories, capturing new personas on masks, sounding out music with their bodies. And by noon, they were ready to synthesize all three classes into a moving, musical, and poetic performance for the last half hour of the camp. (Performance Track students, with their sack lunches and card games, stayed on until 3 pm, to receive private lessons and to participate in master classes, musical ensembles, musical-dance-theater, contemporary dance, currently serving with the US Army; 97 year-old cousin Bernice Ottasen of Palisade; and a friend from Richfield on his way home from a weeks stay at the Veterans Hospital in Salt Lake City. in bringing Leslie safely home.
