Show Page 6 The Gunnison Valley Gazette GVHS fall sports by MITCH PETERSON It’s still hot outside and it seems like the Gunnison Valley High School Bulldogs just wrapped up their spring sports schedule, including that state baseball championship, but it’s already time to dive into fall sports. Tryouts and practices for Bulldog’s golf, girl’s soccer, and girl’s tennis will be starting up in the next few days. Football and volleyball will get going in about another week. Cross Country athletes can run in sanctioned events beginning on August 9. It’s the first year ever for Gunnison girl’s soccer. Local players have competed at the club level for the last couple of years, but the sport is now fully sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association at the 2A level. The Lady Bulldogs will play in a region with Manti, North Sevier, South Sevier, Richfield, Beaver, Millard, and Grand. The program is on a twoyear probationary period to see if enough players will turn out to support varsity and junior varsity teams. Jaron Jensen is the Lady Bulldogs head soccer coach, and he’ll also coach the boy’s team in the spring. He’s anxiously awaiting the season. “It’s been club soccer for way too long,” he says. “We’ve liked the participation we’ve had in the past, and I see improvement in the players,” he said. “Soccer is a sport that requires a lot of different skills. It gives a lot of kids a chance to play,” Jensen said. Tryouts for the team start Monday, July 30, at 7 p.m. at Bulldog field, north of the football field. The Bulldogs will play their first ever sanctioned soccer match on Tuesday, August 21- a region match against Manti. Head coach Doug Agren invites all girls interested in playing tennis for the Bulldogs to the first team practice session Wednesday, August 1st, at 7 pm. at the Bulldog’s tennis courts at the high school. The team’s first match is just a couple weeks after that. Jim Sanders coaches the Bulldog golf team. They’ll get started with a try-out and practice session at Palisade Golf Course this Thursday, July 26th.
