Show Sports Thursday, May 24, 2007 The Gunnison Valley Gazette 2A All Star Game by ANDY HILL The 2A All Star Game, which is one of the longest standing traditions around, was held on Saturday at our outstanding baseball complex. Twenty six boys from across the state came to be honored and compete in this game. A wonderful banquet, in which each boy was recognized for his accomplishments, both on and off the field, was the start of the day. Kevin Nay was given an award for the player who received the most votes from the coaches. This seems to be a tradition for Gunnison players as Justin Hill received this award for the last two years. From there the real fun started once they took the field and played the game that they all love. The teams were broken down into the North and the South All-Stars. The North was coached by Nolan Anderson from North Sevier. And the South was coached by our own Jared Anderson and his staff. In addition to the coaching staff be- Page 9 Academic All-State Congratulations to these four students for being named to Academic All-State for spring sports: Mitch Anderson, son of Ryan and Jodi Anderson of Gunnison, Michael Oliver, son of Jeff and Shelle Oliver of Gunnison, Carly Andersen, daughter of Paul and MaryLou Andersen of Gunnison, and Lisa Bartholomew, daughter of Scott and Lila Bartholomew of Fayette. They were Kevin Nay, Brad Jackson, Jace Anderson, and Jaden Hill. The game was as it should be, a battle of two great teams. The South jumped out ahead early on some tremendous hitting by Dallin Clove from Enterprise and a three run home run by Roman Black from San Juan. But the North did not give up the fight. In the eighth inning they pushed over eight runs to take the lead by two going into the ninth. The South battled back, getting two runs in the ninth and then the winning run in the tenth inning on a RBI by Gunnison’s Jace Anderson. Each of the Bulldogs played exceptionally well and represented the team and valley very well. At the completion of the game, each team was awarded an MVP. They awards went to Jesse Hartle from Richfield and Dallin Clove from Enterprise. Both of these young men played great games. Clove finished the day 4 for 4 with four doubles. Hartle picked up three hits and pitched a solid three innings for the North. in the game. He talked about players, coaches, and of course parents, all of the good things that have to come together to win a championship. Coach Jared Anderson then opened up the floor to anyone who wanted to say a few words. This was a great time to hear from many of the parents and grandparents of the players. It was a wonderful thing to hear about all of the wonderful things that come from the great game of baseball and how it really prepares the kids to become men. Of course the night was also filled with awards. All of the boys were recognized for their work in bringing home the 2A State Championship trophy. Each one of them received a medal, a team photo, and a wonderful championship shirt. The seniors, Chase Mackay and Kyle Piep, were also recognized for all of their hard work and dedication to the program. In addition to those awards, many of the other boys were recognized. In case you were not able to attend, here is a short run down of the awards that were received: Bulldog MVP 2007: Kevin Nay Pitcher of the Year: Brad Jackson Gold Glove: Max Sanders and Chase Mackay New Comer: Heston Neal Batting Champion: Jaden Hill Region 12 MVP: Kevin Nay Region 12 – All region: Brad Jackson, Jaden Hill, Max Sanders, Chase Mackay and Jace Anderson. The end of a season by ANDY HILL The only bad thing about having such a great season, is that it has to come to an end. On Monday night the Gunnison Bulldogs held their annual end of the season banquet to remember the season and give out some much deserved awards. It is a great time to reflect on all of their accomplishments, and also a time to look forward to a great future. The night started off with Coach Ben Hill comparing the 1993 and the 2007 State Championship teams. It was a great time to reflect and laugh about all the good things that happen Gunnison athletes participate in State Track The Utah High School Activities Association held its annual State Track Meet at BYU this past week.
