Fayette honors Guardsmen by MARK HENLINE The Town of Fayette met on Saturday evening to honor the servicemen who have just been called up to serve in Iraq and those who have recently returned from serving. There are seven Guard members from Fayette who are members of the 1st Battalion B Battery 145th Field Artillery Unit from Manti; Brady Crane, the son of Shawn and Jan Crane, Jed and Jay Bartholomew, the sons of Scott and Lila Bartholomew, Jake Mellor, the son of Randy and Tracy Mellor, Ben Bartholomew, the son of Keith and Delene Bartholomew, Jason Mellor, the son of Neil and Kelly Sue Mellor and Neil Mellor, who is the senior member of the group. There were also three men on hand who recently returned from serving in Iraq; Captain Cory Mellor, the son of Carrol and D’Ann Mellor, Gary Bartholomew, the son of Keith and Delene Bartholomew, and Alex Jones who is married to Wendy Mellor Jones. There were many veterans on hand who have served their country in WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, and in Desert Storm. The evening began with the posting of the colors by the Guardsmen. Stacey Mellor then sang the National Anthem followed by the opening prayer given by Sheldon Mellor. Those gathered then enjoyed a roast beef dinner. Next on the program was Austin Kitchell who sang two patriotic songs followed by Kiana Ha’o who sang a medley of songs from the armed forces. The Guard then put on a slide show titled, “Have You Forgotten.” The slide show featured scenes from 911 and from the military in action. Neil Mellor then spoke saying, “I’m proud to be from Fayette and it is an honor to be able to serve with the young men from town.” Mellor then spoke of the 145th’s first deployment shortly after 911 when they were called upon to secure Tooele Depot for a year. He talked about how young men from small towns learn responsibility and how to work. “These young men will serve with honor and will return with honor.” Mellor said. He finished his remarks by saying that there will be 81 men activated to serve, 43 of those men are returned missionaries. “I can’t think of a finer group of men that I would rather serve with.” Following Mellor, Bishop Roland Christensen spoke about this great group of men going to serve and thanked those who have recently returned from their service. Those gathered then sang “God Bless America” after which Bishop Christensen closed the meeting with prayer asking Heavenly Father to watch over these men and their families while they are gone. The 145th have received their orders but the exact details are not being released for security reasons. The group will be deployed early in June where they are expected to spend three months at Fort Bliss for training. They are expected to arrive in Iraq sometime in September. Thank you for your service and God bless! The Sanpitch Dragon is growing as work on it continues. Many families have participated in volunteering their help with this project. Councilwoman Lori Nay, Artists Elise Lazar and Kinde Nebeker along with many others have spent countless hours working on this 100 foot long dragon. If you haven’t had a chance to see the dragon yet, it is certainly worth the stop. Courtesy Photos/Anita Lyons |
