Show C Y M C K Y A10 Sanpete Messenger-Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition M K Wednesday, May 27, 2009 North Sanpete foundation selects board of trustees By Suzanne Dean Publisher MT. PLEASANT—The North Sanpete School District has selected a Board of Trustees for the foundation it established in 2007. The board will include representatives drawn from the PTA or community council at each school, along with six at-large members. Many Utah school districts have set up foundations to receive tax-exempt donations from alumni and others, invest the donations and use the interest for educational needs. The North Sanpete foundation has raised about $45,000 in “seed money.” The idea is to use some of that money for fundraising. “We’ll start out hoping that [many] alumni from the past 50 years would be willing to make a donation,” Superintendent Courtney Syme told the board a few months ago when it discussed the future of the foundation. Syme said the district has lists of graduates but may have some work to get current addresses for alumni. Daniel Green, a school board member assigned to work with the foundation, said the group hopes to get solicitation letters out soon to alumni and local businesses asking for “donations in any amount.” It’ll be quite a few years before the foundation amasses enough principal to generate significant interest. But once it does, Green says, the money can be used “however the board sees fit.” Extra funds from the foundation could come in handy during hard times like the district is experiencing now. “That’s what [the foundation] is designed for,” Green says. New at-large members of the foundation board of trustees are Green, who represents Moroni on the school board; Dale Barker of Mt. Pleasant, a retired teacher and former school board member; John Ericksen of Mt. Pleasant, a retired principal; Clay Walker of Fountain Green, a retired principal; Sheryl Anderson of Mt. Pleasant, another retired principal; and Flo Mitchell of Chester, a retired teacher. School representatives include Chemayne Erickson and Lisa Roberts of Mt. Pleasant Elementary; Julie Jordan and Karen Burgess of Moroni Elementary; Wendy Johnson and Shawna Rawlinson of Fairview Elementary; Cori Oldroyd and Rachael Farnsworth of Fountain Green Elementary; Lorene Clark and Nancy Latimer of Spring City Elementary; Marcia Riddle and Maren Peel of North Sanpete Middle School; and Janet Dowland of North Sanpete High School.
