In some recent business meetings, officials of Zions Bank, which formerly financed Freedom Ford’s vehicles, said they regarded Brown’s and Larson’s companies as being one and the same. That makes Larson angry and sad. “To be viewed as Ron Brown tears my heart out,” he says. The chain of events started seven years ago when JL Larson LLC acquired about an acre of property on Canyon Road (800 North) in Orem and leased it to Brown for Brown’s Utah Valley 4 x 4 business. Flooring Besides simply leasing the land, Larson used his Zions Bank credit line to finance the vehicles Brown obtained at auction. (Auto sales businesses are financed through what is known as “flooring” agreements. A bank covers the dealer’s cost of obtaining a vehicle. When the vehicle is sold, the dealer pays off the “flooring” on the particular car and keeps the balance of the sales proceeds for operating expenses and profit.) Larson says he lent his credit to Brown for a couple of reasons. First, new car dealerships, such as Freedom Ford, get lower interest rates on their flooring lines than used car operations such as Utah Valley 4 x 4. Second, Larson wanted to be sure Brown operated honestly, including paying off financing on his cars, paying sales tax, etc. Speaking of the arrangement with Brown, Larson says, “I had my arms around it. I put a lot of thought into it.” For six years, the arrange- ment worked splendidly, Larson says. The location was wonderful. Brown was an excellent manager who made all of his lease and flooring payments on time. “For six years, he was one of the most honest individuals I ever met,” Larson said. “I don’t know what twists people. I really don’t.” Dishonest dealer About 11 months ago, the first blow in the triple whammy started to unfold. Larson picked up hints that Brown was having financial problems. But Brown’s methods were so crafty that it took a while to figure out what was happening. Larson says he asked Zions Bank to conduct regular flooring inspections, where a bank official checks to make sure all vehicles whose flooring loans aren’t paid off are still at the public KAREN PRISBREY / MESSENGER PHOTO Zions Bank takes significant portion of Freedom Ford inventory last week. site. The inspectors couldn’t find any problems. Then Brown bounced about $300,000 in checks for flooring payments. The facts of what Brown did await court determination. But, Larson says, it appears his dishonest actions centered on trade-ins. Apparently, he was accepting trade-ins that still had Manti City ____________________________________UPAXLP SURGE PROTECTION FOR YOUR HOME Manti City Power Department is offering to Manti residents a Home Guard Low Profile HG Surge Arrester. But rather than using part of the customer or bank payment on the new purchase to pay off the loan on the trade-in, Brown kept the full amount. The result: When an old loan was never paid off, banks and credit unions made the customer responsible for it. Customers ended up with one car and two loans. Larson says one of the victims, a single mother from Fillmore, visited him at Freedom Ford near Christmas. She told him, “I’m making two car payments I can’t afford.
