She still enjoys Music and the Spoken Word. Soon after graduating with a master’s degree in mathematics from Brigham Young University in 2003, Riddle came to Sanpete County. Besides being an assistant professor of mathematics at Snow College, Riddle teaches Chinese and math at Wasatch Academy, as well as being on the council at North Sanpete Middle School. She also is a translator for the LDS Church and is part of a governor’s Chinese interest team. She plays the piano and violin; enjoys dancing, singing and yoga; and likes cooking—all kinds. I love them with all my heart, and I enjoy every minute with them. We always do lots of fun things together.” Both her children enjoy music. Her son composed a piano piece called “Gentle Mother” for her birthday when he was 12, and it touches her heart each time he plays it. When Riddle was really ill last year, her daughter wrote love notes and left them around the house. In addition to feeling loved by those close by, she feels love flowing from her parents and two sisters, although separated by many, many miles, since they’re in China. One day in the early 1990s when she was feeling homesick, lonely and discouraged, she was on Temple Square in Salt Lake City and attended Music and the Spoken Word. She loves music, and she says the music made her feel fresh and new, like a bird given back her wings, allowing her to fly again. She was filled with a strong desire to know what NEW HOME PRICED TO SELL!!!!!!!!! $186,000 Great For Moderate Income Family! Devoted school teacher turns 99 By Emily Sanderson Staff writer EPHRAIM—Happy birthday to Edith Willardson, who will turn 99 on April 24. Willardson taught at Ephraim Elementary School for 26 years and also taught college algebra at Snow College when she was in her eighties. She and her husband, George, enjoyed seven years of retirement when they did a lot of traveling together, but after George’s death, she returned to the classroom. She taught at Snow College from 1982 to 1998, she says, “reteaching” some of the students that she taught at the elementary school. “I thoroughly enjoyed teaching in Ephraim,” she says. “The parents were all cooperative and helpful with the educational needs of their children.” Both she and George, who raised their three chilEdith Willardson dren in Ephraim, were lifelong educators. “I have seen education grow and develop in Ephraim over the years,” she says. “It has been a joy to see many students I taught grow up and become productive citizens.” Willardson was raised in Fairview and Salt Lake City. She met George when she was attending Snow College. The Willardson family has pioneer roots in Ephraim. George taught vocational agriculture and mathematics at Ephraim High School and later taught at Ephraim Middle School. He also was in charge of the Future Farmers of America in Ephraim. Several of the young “farmers” he advised achieved state and national acclaim. Willardson will enjoy a small private party with family members but intends to have a bigger party next year when she turns 100. CENTRAL REALTY, INC. I have no enemies,” she says. Yes, choosing to look at life on the bright side puts the shadows behind us. And living among those who choose sunshine over shadow and who savor sweetness over bitterness is one of life’s richest delights. Spring City Senior Menu (Continued from A5) She enjoys life in Sanpete County, a place where she’s greeted by name at the post office and bank, where she feels like family. She says the people here are “loving and friendly,” and she feels “refreshed and recharged” living here. “Sanpete County has a special spirit, and I feel I belong,” she says. She tells of the time her car’s battery wasn’t working and how her bishop and others changed it within 15 minutes of her telling him one Sunday after church. She wanted to pay them, but they refused. She relates how one time she was near Terrell’s in Mt. Pleasant one wintry day with a flat tire. Some guys saw her in the snow and had her tire changed within five minutes. Riddle feels just like home here—attached, and her daughter feels the same and says, “Mama, we’re not moving.” Riddle writes: “I love my family very much. I feel so blessed to have two wonderful kids, Michael, 15, and Merry, 12. They are the joy of my life. Riddle says she feels like a “pioneer,” part of “a new generation, a new spirit.” The era before us will be “challenging,” she says, yet having conquered so many things makes facing the future with faith that much more likely, even inevitable. For one who has tasted so much bitterness in life, it is clear that Marcia Ling Riddle knows how to swim in the sweetness of life, staying buoy- tainment program at 6:45 at Snow College.
