Show Thursday, November 8, 2007 Snow (Continued from A10) had to admit that Eastern Arizona was the biggest game of the year. “You bet it is,” he said. “Every game is big because we had to win them all, but to this point in the year, this is the biggest game of the year, with all the marbles on the table, playing the No. 4 team in the nation and playing for a national title.” Some of the game’s importance, though, came from a score to be settled, and some bad blood that had been brewing between the two teams since last year. In 2006, the circumstances of Snow vs. Eastern Arizona were much like they were Saturday—the Badgers had a No. 1 ranking, a sofar undefeated season and hopes for a national championship. Eastern Arizona took all that away from them with a defeat in Thatcher, which by several accounts may have been a dish prepared from some home cooking. There was a players’ brawl after the game, too. Would this year’s game be a repeat, or redemption? “You look at the two teams,” Coburn said. “It was a collision course all year; we were watching them and they were watching us.” In fact, Eastern Arizona was watching Snow right up until the game’s beginning, wondering who the Badgers would place under center: Jon Eastman, who reportedly was getting close to being healed enough to play, or Houston Erbstoesser, who had ably filled in at quarterback during Eastman’s five-game absence. “We didn’t tell anybody [Eastman] was starting,” said Coburn. “[Eastern Arizona] sat on the sideline all pre-game trying to decide who was going to play.” It had been less than a week since Eastman himself knew he was going to play. “We made the decision Monday,” Coburn said. With only five days of practice under his belt following five weeks of inactivity, Eastman picked up right where he left off, and did so in a way that belied that he had ever left off at all. He wasn’t flawless—he had two carries for losses, one interception and one sack—but his accomplishments far outweighed those flaws: he completed 11 of 20 passes, averaging 26.7 yards per completion; he threw a total of 304 yards; he handed off for 366 yards rushing. And he racked up those statistics looking comfortable, confident and commanding, right from the start. His performance Saturday showed why, even out of service as long as he was, Eastman never fell out of the top five ranked NJCAA quarterbacks. The game also showed that the Badgers deserve their No. 1 ranking. Badger rushing-offense went for nearly 150 yards more than the leading rushing offense in the nation. Badger defense held the Gila Monsters’ running game to about 120 yards fewer than their season average, and held them to only 5 yards passing. “We played two or three ranked teams previous and beat them handily,” said Coburn, “but when you dominate a No. 4 team like that, that validates our ranking.” NJCAA rankings are subject to the same kind of questioning as NCAA rankings are: do the rankings really mean all that much when the teams see little inter-conference play and so much hinges on pre-season rankings? There may be a little of that at play in Snow’s case. Even though Snow has held the top spot for seven weeks, it has been unable to garner all of the NJCAA poll’s firstplace votes, one or two votes going to other teams each week. “I don’t know who that last holdout is, but I hope this changes their mind, Coburn said. It didn’t. Butler College and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, both with 10-0 records and ranked No. 2 and No. 3 respectively, received one first-place vote apiece in the latest NJCAA poll released yesterday. The win did convince some others, though. Snow is now in first place in both the NJCAA poll and the JC Grid-wire poll for the first time this season. Snow’s final game of the season is this Saturday against New Mexico Military Academy at Robert Stoddard Field (Badger Stadium). The game begins at noon. (Continued from A9) Each year, a selection committee on the Utah Para-education Conference Planning Team, selects deserving individuals for this Outstanding Para-educator Award. Candidates are nominated by their peers based on efficiency and initiative, significant personal and/or professional accomplishments, improvement on the image of para-educators throughout the state, and significant impact on students. “Competition is stiff,” says Elizabeth Jensen, who is over special education services at Gunnison Elementary. “Our district has al- ways been well represented in the awards. It speaks well of our schools and the vision Lorna Larsen and Brian Olmstead have for interventions critical for a child’s success in school.” This year ’s conference theme is “Spotlight on Learning—Starring Utah’s Para-educators,” and targets all para-educators from preschool to high school in all of Utah’s school districts and charter schools. Gov. Jon Huntsman has declared the week of Nov. 12-16 as “Para-educators in Education Week.” A11 Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition SANPETE CLASSIFIEDS AUTOS FOR SALE BUSINESS FOR SALE HEALTH PETS FOR SALE- 2002 Ford Explorer. $11,000.
