The Utah Commemorative Quarter Launch Ceremony will be at the Rio Grande Depot in Salt Lake City. As the official sponsor, Zions Bank will offer the coins at the event. A limit of two $10-rolls of quarters (40 coins per roll) can be purchased per person Nov. 9, but more can be purchased the following week. Trunk or Treat in Gunnison Valley KAREN PRISBREY / MESSENGER PHOTO Fairview cattleman tops Angus registrations By Kirsten Reimschiissel FAIRVIEW—James R. Gillespie of Fairview recently registered the most Angus beef cattle in Utah with the American Angus Association, counting 107 head of Angus cattle. This ranked Gillespie third in Utah for 2007. Overall this year, 347,755 head of Angus were counted from breeders throughout the nation. According to John Crouch, executive vice president of the American Angus Association, this number means there is a strong demand for Angus genetics in commercial herds. For more information about the Angus breed, go to www.angus.org. Palmer awarded grant By Kirsten Reimschiissel MT. PLEASANT— Kenneth Darrel Palmer of JDP Ranch was awarded $13,400 by the Value-Added Producer Grant Program (VAPG) to help raise sales and profit margins through frozen and natural beef marketing. The USDA developed the program to give support for farming families in America. The Stephen T. Gillmor Sheep Co. of Delta was also selected for an award of $225,000. “Both Utah projects are fine examples of how USDA Rural Development can work with farmers and ranchers to improve sales and net-profits on the commodities they produce,” said Richard Carrig, Business and Cooperatives Program director. Zions Bank named top SBA loan provider By Kirsten Reimschiissel SALT LAKE CITY—Zions First National Bank has ranked as Utah’s top small business loan provider again this year. Seismic ‘bump’ closes Sufco Mine for two days By John Hales Managing editor SALINA—Sufco coal mine experienced a rib failure and minor floor heave early Wednesday morning, Oct. 31, that shut off some of the mine’s major operations for two days. Officials from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration closed a portion of the mine after a seismic event similar to the one that caused the Crandall Canyon Mine disaster. “We did record a magnitude 2.8 seismic event near the Sufco mine,” said Jim Pechmann, University of Utah Seismology Department. “And this type of seismic activity, in the level 2 range, is not unusual for the area. There is a lot of activity near the Sufco mine.” The recent activity resulted in an accumulation of coal in the tailgate of what is called the longwall, but at the time no employees were working in that area. MSHA officials closed the longwall portion of the mine. “There were no injuries and no equipment was damaged,” said Kim Link, external affairs officer with Arch Coal. “With the exception of the longwall area, the rest of the mine was operating.” MSHA completed its analysis of the incident and gave Sufco the green light to resume operation of the longwall on Friday afternoon, Nov. 2. “MSHA officials are taking a very cautious approach—and God love them for it,” Link said. “I can’t blame them. They wanted to make sure we have the proper ventilation, secondary escape MFCU (Continued from A7) houses down from the credit union. She doesn’t get around as easily as she once did, but she’s quick to praise the credit union and its helpful staff. “They’re so accommodating,” she says. “I walk with a cane and a walker. All I have to do is call them, and they come right over to the house. Even if I need routes, etc., in order before operations resumed. This allows them the comfort of knowing that we’re protecting our employees.” According to Link, few employees of the mine were affected by the event; it was “work as usual,” but local trucking companies were affected, as trucks were parked through the event. “Safety is a value at Sufco mine,” said Link. “Sufco’s 2006 injury rate was roughly three times better than the national industry average among underground coal mines per MSHA statistics.” Though officially located in Salina, much of the mine itself is located within Sanpete County, and the mine employs many Sanpete County residents.
