Service has been a big part of James' life. She has a great love for the youth of this valley, having served in numerous organizations of t h e Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. James has served in the P.T.A. organization at the elementary, middle, GUNNISON—Everyone I've talked with about the Fourth of July activities here in town last week praised the efforts of all the committee members who made the event so successful. Bigger crowds, great activities, and the best weather conditions we' ve had for several years. Cloud cover so no one baked in the sun during the parade, and gentle breezes in the evening to keep everyone cool, what more could we have asked for? Congratulations to Jeana James, Kevin Hansen, Nicole Anderson, and Jake Childs for having been awarded this year's Jaycee's Distinguished Service Award prior to the auction on Monday the third. I had a lovely visit with Jay and Janet Childs at the park. They have recently completed a mission for the LDS church in Ohio. It was nice that they were able to witness the awarding of the DSA to their grandson Jake, who is the son of Larry and Crystal Childs. Barbara Sanderson was excited to share news of the mission call she and husband Ira, have received to the Missouri, Nauvoo, Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They enter the MTC at Provo on September 1. We are happy to report that 12-year-old Jessie Dunford is recuperating from having been hit on the head by a foul ball while out at the baseball complex on Tuesday, June 27. With extraordinary effort, faith and prayers, Jessie is slowly regaining the ability to walk unassisted and talk in full sentences. She is a remarkable little lady and has truly been blessed. Marian Christensen, daughter of Eric andTheo Christensen, returned July 8 from a seven-day trip to our nation's Capitol in Washington, D.C. with 12 other Girl Scouts from Sanpete and Sevier Counties. The girls visited historical sites and learned many things about our nation's history. They had a wonderful time. Marian appreciates all the help that family, friends, and neighbors gave her to make the trip possible, and says a big thank you. Congratulations to Brandon Jensen, son of John and Laurie Jensen, who recently attended the Governor's Honor Academy at SUU in Cedar City with 47 other young men from around the state. Brandon received a four-year scholarship and six college credits after completing the academy. At sunrise, Tuesday, July 4 while up on the G-hill, Seth Hendrickson, son of Hal and Roby n Henrickson, proposed to Jessica Jensen, daughter of John and Laurie Jensen. The answer was yes, and a December wedding date has been set. Excited grandparents of the happy couple are Reed and Louise Syndergaard of Manti, Roger and Bonnie Jensen of Gunnison, and Sheila Alvord of Kanab. Congratulations kids. On Saturday, July 1 while shopping at the grocery store, I spoke with former valley resident Carma Gregerson and learned of the recent passing of her brother Tommy Clark. Tom who had been here helping his mother Alice Clark following her stroke a few weeks ago died of causes related to a liver disease. Carma also reported that her mother, who worked in the cafeteria at the elementary school for a number of years, and also at the Gunnison Information booth during the summer, is at the Nephi Heritage Hills Health & Rehabilitation Center, and is slowly gaining her strength back. We send our condolences to Tommy's mother, children, siblings and former wife Corinne. We also wish Alice our very best for a speedy recovery. Sympathy is expressed to the husband, children, grandchildren and extended family members of Cynthia Page who passed away early Tuesday morning, July 4 at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. Graveside services were held Saturday, July 8 at the'Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. and high schools, and helped with many booster club activities at each, of the schools. James has been involved with the Mormon Miracle Pageant, has been secretary to the Sanpete County Fair Board, and has judged many beauty pageants. James is the daughter of, LaRue and Leon Pexton of Mona and the late Kirk Lynn. As part of the student government, he helped organize "Bulldog Bucks," and was instrumental in raising enough money to supply several families with Christmas. . He has been involved in 4- ing an amphitheater in the Park. Centerfield A morning breakfast and an evening parade later on mokes the town of Centerfield different. The city has chosen to hold its parade in the evening to avoid competition with other cities on the July 24th Utah birthday holiday. The parade starts Saturday at 6 p.m. and will be followed by a giant community dinner. Mayor Darwin Jensen says bring your own plates and a small donation for your dinner. There is no set price but the city will be serving steaks. On July 24, the bishoprics of the two Centerfield wards will start serving breakfast at 7 a.m. and keep serving until everyone has eaten. No other activities are scheduled for the remainder of Pioneer Day. ELVA JENSEN 52B-33B2 CENTERFIELD—Congratulations and thanks to the committee that organized the Fourth of July celebration. The parade was really great, the fireworks were superb, and it was great fun seeing all the activities that went on. The art show, the quilt show, games for the kids and the adults were just great We know a lot of work went in the planning, and we appreciate those who are willing to carry the load. Many families got together for the holidays. I believe everyone knew what we were celebrating. I asked one little girl what we were celebrating, and she said, "It's America's birthday!" What a blessing to live in America, but we must keep fighting for our freedoms both here and abroad. I received a letter the other day stating that some groups are trying to pass a law to keep chaplains from saying "Jesus Christ" in their prayers. It is frightening for these things to happen here in the land of the free. We need to keep in touch with our senators and representatives. We need to honor the veterans and those fighting -now to keep America free, but also to help others have and enjoy the freedoms we have. Mardy and Karen Jensen had their daughter, Kathy, and her three children with them for a few days last week. Kathy's husband is in training in Texas and will soon be on his way to Iraq for the second time. It is hard to see what sacrifices have been made for us. We should be grateful for each one called to serve their country. The open house for Dallin R. Anderson and Lindsay Nordgren was held July 15 at Ron and Julie Andersons' home in Centerfield. Their reception was held in West Jordan on July 14. Rhett Holyoak and Alissa Mason were married in the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple in American Fork June 23, Following the marriage, a reception was held in American Fork.
