Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black A2 Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition Wednesday, August 3, 2005 Teacher moonlighting as mountain man travels through Sanpete on way home By Karen Prisbrey Staff writer If you were traveling the U.S. 89 corridor last week, you may have happened upon a poet, teacher, honorably discharged soldier and frontiersman. Three Feathers, as he prefers to be known while in his frontier dress, hails from California, and has been traveling to various mountain-men rendezvous in the Rocky Mountain region since September 2004. His mules, a 16-year-old and a 19-year-old, are his traveling companions. They will travel, usually, six to 16 miles in a day, depending on forage, water, and temperature. Passersby often think Three Feathers is a hippy because of his long hair, beard, and clothing. They don’t look closer to see that he is dressed in traditional mountain man attire. He travels light, with only the necessities, and carries what he calls a “smokeless signaling device,” a cell phone for emergencies. Three Feathers, age 56, a teacher by vocation who is on a sabbatical at the present time, says he is anxious to go back to the classroom. “Kids need to learn to play and enjoy life, instead of growing up so soon. You can never go back and retrieve that special time of your life,” he says. “What’s wrong with learning about medieval times, or frontier life and times?” he says. “Kids use to play Robin Hood, Tarzan, cowboys and Indians, they played out of doors. Now they either sit in front of the TV, or their computers or play stations all day long. They never get any fresh air or sunshine. Their brains are warped. “They receive a poor, and very limited education when it comes to important events in his- tory. Their reading skills and command of English, and even penmanship are poor. They are all categorized into groups. They are no longer individuals. “Kids turn to mind-altering drugs for escape from all that plagues them today, yet if they would take a trip to the mountains without their music, cell phones, beer, soda pop, and tobacco, lay back and enjoy all that nature has to offer them including cool crystal clear water for drinking, they would feel better about themselves and their surroundings. They would feel invigorated, and whole.” Three Feathers was in the Army from 1966-1975, and asked that he not be questioned further on that area of his life. In sharing his political views, he said, “We need permits of one kind or another for everything we do. We have had such a short, but hot, summer. But after the 24th of July , it is time to go back to school. The funeral services for Elaine Sorenson Christenson were very special. Many of her relatives from Centerfield and Axtell attended. The Alex and Christena Jensen family reunion was held July 23, 2005 at the Centerfield Park. Over 190 members of the family were in attendance. Ivan and Madge Jensen and their family were the hosts this year and did a great job. Ivan and Madge’s family includes Mardy and Karen, Venna, LaMaun, Russell and Sherri. Evelyn Schurroan (a granddaughter of Alex and Christena Jensen), who lives in Pennsylvania, made a new directory with the names of all the direct descendants and their spouses and children, addresses, phone numbers and birthdates. McKay Jensen and Marcia Rico helped get it put together. What a great reunion, Ivan and Madge, the family all had a good time. Other children of Alex and Christena Jensen are Margaret Thomson, (deceased); Rignel Jensen, (deceased); Robert Jensen, (deceased); Ivan; Zelma; Eugene; Elva; and Moyle. Centerfield residents celebrated the Pioneer Day with a breakfast the morning of July 23rd, and with a parade at 6 p.m. that was followed by a ham dinner. There was a large crowd in attendance, thanks to all who assisted these events. Congratulations to Eugene and Nancy Jensen, the grand marshals of the parade. Virginia Sorenson has once again moved to Centerfield. We welcome her; and her family. Alice Clark of Centerfield has returned to her old position of attendant at the information booth in Gunnison for the summer. She will resume helping at the elementary school in the fall. Work on the Old Rock Church in Centerfield is progressing, but volunteers are always needed. It will be great when it is completed. Sanpete News Company, Inc., publishing the GUNNISON VALLEY EDITION GOOD NEWS GUNNISON— How many times have you called to report an error in a billing or a mistake on an order and been told, “computers don’t make mistakes?” Year’s ago when I was first learning computer and key punch skills, my instructor made this comment, “garbage in, is garbage out.” Each week as I rush to meet newspaper deadlines I try to cross all my t’s, dot all my i’s and clean up any garbage that remains. Try as I may, invariably a mistake is called to my attention later. My moccasins are getting very tight at this point, but I have received enough encouragement from many of you to persevere. I promise I’ll try harder.Diane Bogh Funk, her sisters and their families met at Anthony’s Flat up Willow Creek Canyon on July 23 for their annual family reunion. Carter Blackham returned home on Thursday, July 28, having completed his service in the Denmark Copenhagen Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He reported on his mission Sunday, July 31 at at the Gunnison 5th Ward Chapel. Welcome home Carter. It was a pleasure to visit with Bruce and Becky Blackham, their children, Heather and Brady, and their grandchildren Avery, Shea, Ellie, Sara and Molly last week at the Mayfield Pioneer Celebration. It was there that I learned of Carter’s return and also that Brady and his family are moving to Las Vegas where Brady will begin his medical school training. Good Luck to Brady and his family on this new phase in their lives. Michael Sanders has received his mission call to serve in the England Manchester Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Michael is the son of Jim and Suzanne Sanders, and the grandson of Gladys and the late Roger Andersen, and Marie and Kent Sanders, all of Gunnison. Michael spoke in the 1st Ward sacrament meeting Sunday, July 31, and departed for his mission on Tuesday, August 2, reporting to the Mission Training Center in England. Congratulations Michael, and best wishes for a successful experience. Sandy and Neil Schauers stopped by the house last Saturday to give me a report on their latest adventure to mainland China in June. The Schauers have done a lot of touring since their retirements and say they would be willing to answer your questions about vacation destinations. Give them a call at 528-5496. Congratulations are in order for Brenten Petersen and his new bride, Maren Andrew, who were married Friday, July 29 in the Manti Utah Temple. Brenten’s parents are Todd and Nora Ann Petersen. Maren’s parents are Kirk and Lynette Andrew of Magna. Nola and Newell Pickett are excited to report the marriage of their granddaughter Becki Pickett to Christopher Webb in the Mount Timpanogos Temple on Saturday, July 30. Becki’s parents are Randy and Jacque Pickett of Fayette. Chris’s parents are Tom and Shirley Webb of Highland. Congratulations, Becki and Chris. Just stop paying taxes and you forfeit everything to him. “We send our young sons and daughters to slaughter to defend someone else’s freedoms, and pay for protection from the criminal element in our own communities, while blood runs cold in our streets. “Its time people in this great land arise and take a stand for what our founding fathers came to this great country to do. To live in peace, free of taxation without representation. To practice religion how, where, and what we may, and live free from subjugation.” As Three Feathers began his journey down the highway he was asked if people give him any trouble as he travels, to which he responded, “Yes some do, people for the most part are decent and interested in his travels, but I’ve been called names, had rocks thrown at me and been spit upon.” CLASS DATE: 7/26/2005 AVG. They, along with Bennett, see an opportunity to promote the history and culture of the area as shaped by those early Mormon pioneers. Locally, proponents also hope for an economic boost that increased tourism could bring because of the special designation. Bennett’s bill would itself provide a bit of a boost. The legislation authorizes up to $10 million for the heritage area, although the federal government’s share in the cost of creating the area would not exceed 50 percent. PRINTING The Messenger 35 S.
