Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black A10 Sanpete Messenger/Sanpete Messenger-Gunnison Valley Edition Lady Hawks split first region games By Doug Johnson Staff writer MT. PLEASANT—The North Sanpete softball team is 1-1 after a pair of road games to open the 2005 league schedule. Normally, North Sanpete softball and baseball teams bundle up with ski coats for their preseason games in early March, but enjoy warm, sunny weather by the time league play begins in the last week of the month. This year has been backwards, however, as gorgeous weather greeted teams in the preseason and their first Region 8 games were played in the blustery cold. Last Friday the Hawk softball team evened its region record at 1-1 with a 4-2 win as they braved the cold at Delta. The team lost its region opener the week before by the same score during a winter storm in Lehi. The Hawks went 4-3 in preseason games through the warm first three weeks of March as they faced several top ranked 3A and 4A schools. At Delta last Thursday, North Sanpete broke open a scoreless pitchers’ duel in the fourth when Mandy Parks doubled to the gap in right and later scored on Delta miscues. The Hawks poured it on in the fifth, scoring three runs on the strength of a double by Lindsey Larsen and a single by Shandi Tucker. North Sanpete hurler Mandy Johnson wavered only slightly in the sixth as a pair of walks led to two unearned runs, which made the final score 4-2. Johnson scattered a pair of singles before being relieved by runners at third. Manti coach Steve Lund says his team “played well, and they had fun,” and sees progress in the young Gunnison team. “They’ve improved since the last time we played them. They held us scoreless for three innings,” he noted. With the win, the Templars move to 3-1 in Region 12, one game behind the league-leading San Juan Broncos, while Gunnison is 0-4. Both Manti and Gunnison have Region 12 games this week. The Bulldogs host the Richfield Wildcats, while the Templars have a road game against the North Sevier Wolves, and a home match-up with the South Sevier Rams. Manti traveled to West Valley City the day before the Gunnison game and lost a close one to the 5A Hunter Wolverines. The Templars grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Wolverines got two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, added one more in the third, then held on for the 3-2 win. The Templars had 14 hits in the game, while Mandy Hatch held the Wolverines to six. Manti shortstop Andie Shaw was two-for-three against Hunter, to complement a three-for-four performance in the Gunnison game, while Holly Harman was a combined five-for-six in those games. Gunnison was scheduled to host Millard in a non-region game last week, but for unknown reasons the Eagles didn’t show up, and the game won’t be rescheduled. (Continued from A9) of the inning to get the save. The Bulldogs produced four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning last Wednesday against the Emery Spartans to realize a 7-5 victory. The win is the third victory over a 3A school this year. Freshman Kevin Nay got credited with the win. Coming up for the Templars is a road game at North Sevier on Tuesday (results not available by press time), which Trythall said could be a big test for his team. Then on Friday the Templars take on South Sevier at home. Manti beat the Rams in a non-region match-up early, but lost in a region game three weeks ago. Trythall said the Templars are looking for a little revenge. After the Gunnison’s match on Tuesday against Richfield, the Bulldogs will travel to Nephi to take on the Wasps. Laney Jacobson in the sixth. In Lehi, the Pioneers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to steal the leagueopening win from the Lady Hawks. Cold and blowing rain kept both teams from playing their best games, and they will be looking for better weather when Lehi visits North Sanpete next Thursday for a rematch. At the midpoint of their season the Lady Hawks are still trying to put fielding woes behind them as 17 of the 30 runs they have given up have been unearned. Normally a slick Wednesday, April 6, 2005 fielding team, North Sanpete has averaged almost three errors per outing. Sophomore Laney Jacobson leads a young but experienced mound corps for the Hawks with a record of 3-2 and an ERA of 0.97. Fellow sophomore Janelle Kendall sports an ERA of 1.35 and junior Mandy Johnson has a respectable ERA of 2.72. Offensively North Sanpete has four regulars batting over .300, led by Mandy Parks who is 6-for-12 for an even .500 average. Hayley Larsen is hitting .364, with Lindsey Larsen at .320 and Skyler Dunn at .308. Trista Lee Holgreen has driven in five runs to lead the squad, while Dunn and Johnson have four RBIs each. The Lady Hawks played their league home opener on Tuesday (results not available at press time) when they hosted the Emery Spartans to open a six-game home stand. Emery is 1-1 in region play and 1-5 overall following an 111 loss at Lehi last Thursday. The Spartans downed Carbon 7-6 two weeks ago to win their opening region game. North Sanpete will host a couple of 4A teams, Payson and Spanish Fork, before returning to league play with home games against Carbon on Tuesday, April 12, and Lehi on April 14. Softball (Continued from A9) double, while Kelsey Johnson was two-for-three with a double and a triple, and Carrie Oberg had two doubles. Each Manti starter reached base at least twice. “Manti just hit the ball well, and their pitcher was good today,” Gunnison catcher Alacia Satterfield said, who had all three of Gunnison’s hits with a single and two doubles. “We’ll win some games if we can play like we did for most of today’s game.” Gunnison coach Lori Winters agreed. “We had a ball game until that last inning,” she said. “They just hit the ball well, and we didn’t hit like we usually do. But our girls defended well,” she said. Satterfield threw out two Manti runners at second base and assisted on two other putouts, while Carly Anderson and Makale Fitzgerald each threw out PRINTING The Messenger 35 S.
