Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black A10 Sanpete Messenger/Sanpete Messenger-Gunnison Valley Edition It’s not over ‘til it’s over Young Manti tennis team ‘hold their own’ in St. George tourney Lady Badgers take series with comeback victories The Lady Badgers proved that it’s not over until it’s over with two come-from-behind wins in the bottom of the seventh inning over the Lady Spartans of Colorado Northwestern Community College on Friday. The Badgers split their Saturday games. Trailing by three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning the Badgers put four runs across the plate to pick up the 8-7 win in the first game on Friday. Trailing by four runs in the next game going into the bottom of the seventh was not a problem either as Snow College won 9-8 on last inning heroics. There would be no late inning excitement Saturday as the Lady Badgers lost the first game 6-8. The second game would require no late inning magic as the Badgers put it away early with the 6-0 shut out. Snow College is now third in the conference, but they host the number one team Salt Lake Community College this weekend. The Bruins have yet to lose a softball game in conference action after taking four straight from the number-two team Dixie College. Bulldogs (Continued from A9) What makes Hill’s performance so impressive is the fact that San Juan scored 30 runs against North Sevier to start the season. “He shut down a real good team,” Anderson said. Anderson said the Bulldogs are starting to warm up at the plate, and hit five home runs in their final two games last weekend. Of course, there could be concern that the Bulldogs have already peaked and could be headed for a long season, but Anderson, with his talk of improvement and “things we can work on,” said he feels differently. But he did say the Bulldogs have their work cut out for them, and the road to the state champi- onship would be difficult. After a great season last year—which ended with a disappointing fourth place finish at the state tournament—and a 4-0 start that has garnered Gunnison a first place ranking in 2-A baseball, the Bulldogs have placed a bull’s eye on their chest. “Now we have to hold through,” Anderson said. “Now teams are here to knock us off.” Gunnison faced South Sevier Tuesday (results not available at press time) On Wednesday, Gunnison will take on 3-A Canyon View in St. George and a home game is tentatively scheduled for Friday against Grand. Hawk hardballers shaking off cobwebs, drop first two games By Doug Johnson Staff writer MT. PLEASANT—The North Sanpete Hawk baseball team got off to an inauspicious start last week, dropping their first two games, 10-0 at Gunnison on Wednesday (see story on A9) and 13-1 at home against Union on Friday. The Hawks were still trying to get the winter out of their bats, and they could manage only one hit in each outing. On Friday, Union’s Colby Dye was too much for the Hawks as he held them to one run on one hit and struck out 13 for the win. Dye was also three-for-three at the plate and drove in three runs. Brad Moosman smacked a single to center for North Sanpete’s only hit. Kyle Christiansen scored from first on the play when the Union centerfielder misplayed the ball. Christiansen started both games on the mound for North Sanpete and both times was relieved by Tyler Christensen. Blaine Larsen pitched the last two innings for the Hawks against Union. Christensen started behind the plate in both games, with Tyler Anderson handling the catching duties when Christensen went to the mound. The Hawks played at Grantville on Monday and host Juab today Before traveling to Hurricane this weekend for a preseason tournament. Swap Meet Starting April 1st EVERY WEEKEND! Van Orman and doubles partner Jon Peterson only suffered one loss at the tournament. ST. GEORGE—In their first meet of the year, a young squad of Manti Templar netters held their own against some well-established state programs. Bryce Barton and Jason Sorensen were undefeated in number two doubles, winning over Clearfield, 6-3,6-2; besting Ogden 6-4, 6-3 and topping Davis, 6-4, 6-2. Although Tim Kjar lost all of his matches, he was competitive in the tough number one singles slot. In the loss to Clearfield, the junior won the opening set 6-4 before losing the final two sets in tiebreakers. Sophomore Jordan Van Orman and senior Jon Peterson, the most experienced doubles team, defeated Clearfield, 6-2, 63 before toppling Ogden 6-4, 57, 7-6 in a tiebreaker. They duo defeated Hurricane 6-1,6-1. Their lone loss came at the hands of Davis, 0-6, 0-6. Harrison Barton defeated Clearfield in number two singles 6-2, 6-4. But Ogden took his measure 3-6,2-6. Vince Bradley lost to Ogden 0-6,1-6, and came back to win at number three singles over Hurricane, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Kent Ogden, lost to Davis 2-6, 3-6, but teamed with Jake Anderson to garner a good 6-2, 7-5 victory over Hurricane. Anderson is a newcomer to tennis and showed promise for a junior neophyte. Lady Hawks go 2-2 at St. George tourney By Doug Johnson Staff writer ST. GEORGE—The North Sanpete Lady Hawk softball team shook off the winter chill with a trip to the March WarmUp Tournament in St. George last weekend. The Lady Hawks played a game on Friday against Bear River, in which they lost 1-5, and then followed that up with four games on Saturday at Snow Canyon High School. The girls pulled out a 3-2 squeaker over Canyon View on Saturday morning. The Hawks’ Skyler Dunn won the game with a two-run homer in the fourth. Hawk Aubrey Poulson led North Sanpete to an 11-2 thrashing of West with a pair of hits. Timpanogos then earned a 6-5 win over North Sanpete, scoring twice through the team’s last at-bats to pull out the win. The Hawks wrapped up play with a 4-0 win over Orem. Poulson led the Hawk attack with five hits in the tourney, followed closely by Lindsay Larsen with four hits and Haylee Larsen with three. Dunn, Mandy Johnson and Trista Lee Holgreen each drove in three runs in the tournament. Kendall picked up the wins on the mound for North Sanpete against Canyon View and Orem, and Laney Jacobson was credited with the win over West and charged with the loss against Timpanogos. Johnson was stuck with the loss in the tourney opener against Bear River. Teasha Earl also saw some duty on the mound in the win over West. Kendall struck out 12 hitters in 10 innings of work. The Lady Hawks will be working on their defense, as 14 errors led to 10 of 15 runs. This week North Sanpete will play at Pleasant Grove on Wednesday and then host two- time defending 3-A champion Tooele on Friday. Fans can watch Friday’s match-up at 3 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant softball complex east of the high school. Martial artists advance in rank Students of Royal West Martial Arts in Ephraim recently took tests to advance their rank.
