Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black Wednesday, March 16, 2005 A7 Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition CENTERFIELD Job Vacancy COURIER Compiled by Kathy Lin Eggleston Not many people have a helicopter parked in their drive way but Carol Bert Robertson, 76, of Fairview gives directions to his house by the green one that is parked there. Born in Fairview on March 4, 1929, Robertson didn’t know there was a Great Depression. He grew up in Fountain Green herding his father’s sheep. “I met a few mountain lions doing it,” Robertson said. “One day I was on a narrow chokecherry path when I came face to face with a mountain lion. I don’t know how that horse swapped ends as fast as it did, but the lion went one way and I went back the other.” Carol Robertson Robertson went into the service in 1951 and later took flying lessons on the GI bill to become a commercial pilot. He worked commercially and as a private pilot taking passengers or skydivers up for jumps. Robertson worked for Reynolds Electrical, which held contracts at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site. “I could keep my airplane out Deseret Rock close to the test site,” Robertson said. “I would fly home to Sanpete County or to Nephi every week. Robertson worked on construction, driving truck, hauling all the lumber out to where the testers were going to set off the bombs. “I haul all the bomb components and have a certificate that I participated in the atomic tests. I even babysat two of the bombs the night before they were to go off.” Working at Nuclear Test site was an exciting time for Robertson but he ended up with three different kinds of cancer. “I am on the mend now,” Robertson said After trying to keep the ranch going long distance, Robertson took early retirement at the test site in 1984, and came home to farm. He now lives with his 100-year-old mother, Fern Robertson, who cooks and cleans for him while he handles the ranch work. Robertson has three daughters. “They weren’t much help on the farm but they were sure worth it,” Robertson said. “I love my daughters and I have seven, soon to be eight grandchildren.” . “And I just went out to the airport - that is still my old love life – and found a new helicopter,” said Robertson, who is studying up on the manual and is going up in two or three weeks. “I’ll fly it and see if I can’t learn a thing or two,” he said.
