Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black Wednesday, January 12, 2005 Manti girls split games, prepare for region play By Karmal Mandel Staff writer JUAN DIEGO—The Manti Templar girls’ fought the good fight last Thursday against the number two ranked Juan Diego Soaring Eagle last Thursday, but finished 14 points shy of the win with a final score of 49-62. The young Templar team struggled against a hard press by Juan Diego that Manti head coach Jim Nelson said, “resulted in 16 turnovers in the first half of the game.” However, the Templars were able to stay within one point of the Eagle by the end of the first quarter. Three out of the five starters for Manti got into foul trouble early in second quarter, allowing Juan Diego to outscore the Templars by 16 points, for a half time score of 17-34. In the fourth quarter the Templars tried to make a comeback and scored 21 points to the Eagle’s 10, but it was a too little, too late for the win. Center Sili Hafoka led the Templars with 24 points, but other team members had a hard time scoring on the Eagles tough defense. Cassie Tucker who usually scores in the double-digits, had a hard time getting her shots to fall and came up with only five points for the game. Holli Harman and Candalyn Kjar both had a point. Despite the scoring troubles, two Templars managed to put up some good shots from the outside the three-point line. Lori Jonson, who has been averaging three points a game, hit two three pointers and came away with nine points. Andrea Litteral surpassed her average of six points a game, hitting three three-pointers for nine points. Senior Lori Johnson had a good game and complemented her eight rebounds with some beautiful passes and led the Templars with six assists for the game. As of Wednesday last week, the Templars Staff writer COALVILLE—A 55-60 overtime loss to Juan Diego last Wednesday and a 63-55 loss to North Summit on Friday put the Templars on a two-game skid coming out of the break and going into region play. Against Juan Diego, the Templars kept the Soaring Eagle at arms length throughout the first half. Identical 16-13 quarters gave the Templars a 32-26 lead going into intermission. In the third quarter, two different teams seemed to emerge. Defense was the name of the game as Manti and Juan Diego held each other to seven points. The Templars maintained their six-point halftime lead going into the fourth quarter, but suddenly the only Templar who could score was Taylor Salanoa, who had scored all of Manti’s points in the third quarter and produced a game-leading 25 points. But Salanoa’s efforts weren’t enough to fend off an 18-point Juan Diego fourth quarter, which tied the score at 51 and sent the game into overtime. Manti was able to eke out a four-point lead with just under two minutes remaining, but that was the last offense the Templars could pull off. Manti had two major contributors in Salanoa and Josh Hugentobler, who scored 15 each. Devin Frischknecht contributed six while Travis Thompson chipped in five. The North Summit Braves put on an offensive clinic two nights later against the Templars when five North Summit players produced double figures. Three Templars did their best to fend off North Summit; however, Josh Hugentobler’s game-leading16 points, Travis Thompson’s 14 and Tyler Gunderson’s 11 was not enough to overcome a miserable second quarter where Manti gave up 11 points to the Braves. Manti started out acceptably, posting 13 points and only giving up two to North Summit’s 15. The Templars did the same in the third, only giving up three to North Summit, 14-17. Manti rallied in the fourth quarter and gained eight points, 19-11, but it was not enough to overcome the less-than-stellar second. Manti is in third position in Region 12 with a 5-6 record, just below second place Richfield (6-5) and first place South Sevier (7-3). The Templars have a good chance to improve that record when they start region play this week with home games against fourth-place North Sevier (3-6) tonight and fifth-place San Juan (36) on Friday. Lady Hawks brought down by Orem Tigers, 40-66 This week the Templars will be on the road and will play their first region games against number two North Sevier on Tuesday and at league leading San Juan on Friday. Manti is currently listed third in the Region 12 standings. Staff writer OREM—The North Sanpete Lady Hawk basketball team started out the New Year with a devastating 40-66 loss to the Orem Tigers on Jan. 6. The Lady Tigers took off running and never looked back, outscoring the Lady Hawks 28-17 in the first half. The Lady Hawks came out strong in the third and kept pace with the Tigers. Both teams tallied 13 in the third quarter. But the Tigers threw out all they had in the fourth and demolished North Sanpete 2510 in the final stanza. Orem had four players score in double digits, but no one scored more than the Lady Hawk’s Jessica Aagard who had 19 points in the game. Other contributing Lady Hawks were Aubree Poulson with 11, Laney Jacobsen with seven, Holly Christensen with two and Lacey Collard ended with one. Region action starts on Jan. 13 when the Lady Hawks travel to Lehi to take on the Pioneers. At 3-8, the Lady Hawks could desparately use a win against Lehi, a team that sits just above North Sanpete in the standings at 4-7. MT. PLEASANT—With a 54-39 win over the North Sevier Wolves last Saturday in Salina, the North Sanpete boys finished their pre-season on a four-game winning streak. The Hawks, who have won seven of their last eight games, go to 9-3 with the win, their best record in more than a decade. North Sanpete stormed to a 26-13 lead in Salina on Saturday and then held North Sevier at arms length in the second half to preserve the win. North Sanpete point guard John Anderson had five assists in the first half to help the Hawks pull away. The North Sanpete big men were able to dominate offensively with senior center Eric Watson scoring 15 points and sophomore forward Austin Jorgensen adding 10. Tyler Anderson had eight points and Kyle Poulson chipped in six. North Sevier, which drops to 3-6 with the loss, was led by Daniel Wanlass with 12 points. Watson leads North Sanpete with an average of 12.7 points per game while Anderson averages an even 10. Jorgensen is at 9.7 points per game and Poulson scores at a clip of 8.7 per outing. North Sanpete begins region play this Friday hosting the Lehi Pioneers at 7 p.m. Lehi also had a good preseason with a record of 9-4, and at times was ranked in the top five in 3A. Lehi opened region play against Delta at home on Wednesday. (Results not available at press time.) Lehi, completing its final season in 3A, began the season with a five-game win streak. The Pioneers will move up a classification next season. Lehi has four preseason wins over 4A schools (Pleasant Grove, Springville, Box Elder and Sky View) along with a 4034 win over two-time defending 3A champ Wasatch. Rounding out Region 8, Delta is at 6-5 on the season while Carbon is 5-8 and Emery is 3-9. Bulldogs split games against South Summit, Juan Diego Gunnison boys at 3-7, struggling to find consistency By Sean Hales Staff writer GUNNISON—The Gunnison Bulldogs split their first two games of the new year with a 65-58 road win over South Summit last Wednesday and a devastating 32-56 loss to Juan Diego at home two nights later. The split games came after a close loss to North Sanpete before the break. Gunnison faced off against the 3A Hawks on Dec. 23 and managed a respectable performance in the 40-43 loss. Gunnison big man Jack Pay, who is an important key to a successful Bulldog offense, led all scorers with 15 points. Ryan Frandsen and Levi Christensen were also key contributors with 11 and seven points respectively. To this point, Gunnison has had little help from its bench, but against South Summit the Bulldogs showed that their bench can contribute. In particular, Taylor Stewart’s 10 points went a long way in the Bulldog win. Gunnison had five other players approaching 10 points, including Ross Peterson, Shane Peterson, Ryan Frandsen and Levi Christesnen. Wayne Young led the team with 17. Gunnison’s balanced attack was too much for the one-man show of South Summit’s Trevor Wagstaff. Wagstaff finished with 27 of the Wildcat’s 58 points including four threepointers. Gunnison’s defense also proved to be too much for South Summit to handle. The Bulldogs forced numerous turnovers and wreaked havoc on South Summit’s offense. Gunnison never had a blowout quarter, and posted a narrow two-point lead going into half time. The Bulldogs went up by five in a 19-16 third quarter, and then rode a 7-0 scoring streak early in the fourth for the victory. But the Bulldogs couldn’t capitalize on that momentum and fell to Juan Diego, due in large part to lethargic perfor- mances in the first and third quarters. Gunnison dropped seven points in the first quarter to the Soaring Eagle, but was able to minimize second quarter losses to just a point. However, in the third, the first quarter ‘Dogs showed up and gave up nine points. By the fourth the Soaring Eagle had a commanding 17-point lead, which was too much for Gunnison to overcome. Frandsen, Shane Peterson and Ross Peterson were Gunnison’s high scorers with five each. Joey Crane chipped in four and Stewart contributed three. Going into region play Gunnison is at the bottom of the heap with a 3-7 record, but in the hunt for fourth with North Sevier and San Juan, both at 3-6. Gunnison starts region play tonight at home against second place Richfield (which has a 65 record) and continues on Friday when the Bulldogs travel to Salina to take on North Sevier.
