Show do the people of eureka want A public park editor eureka reporter dear sir I 1 noticed in n your last as wee week s issue a very per pertinent men ques question on v vz z do 0 the people of eureka want a public park As a citizen and taxpayer of this c city ty I 1 answer emphatically ca y no and n the writer believes that a vast majority of the taxpayers would also answer in the negative if given an opportunity to be heard I 1 believe that money expended up on such an undertaking upon the site selected would be practically lv wasted and the amount required to carry the project to completion would be no small sum parks arks are very desirable and nee essary in large thickly populated cities where there is no place tor for children to play except upon the streets and which on account of heavy eavy tra traffic ic is usually denied them also in the valley iley towns where water Is plentiful and natural conditions are ideal tor for such places condl eions in eureka however are very different As you stated it is very difficult to raise trees and lawns here on account of wind and un favorable climate and as all the water would have to be pumped this will be a heavy expense aside from hired labor necessary for continual up keep and it is very doubtful if a sufficient quantity of water is aval available e by y pump pumping na to supply y suc such a park as contemplated for some years past the water from the city well having been found to be unsuitable tor for household purposes has been used by a d con sid erable number of residents for lawn sprinkling as well as tor for the city streets this area extending from the extreme north east part of the city to wallace avenue on main street and in consequence ot of this water this portion of the city has been beautified by property owners and is now therefore a credit to the city as well as individual owners the water has been and should be paid tor for by the users and therefore need not be any expense to the city the present plans of our city coun cil according to the published report of their last meeting is to discon dinue this service and use all such water together with that obtained from the chief cons mining co for park and streets and by placing meters on all lawn owners force them to pay a prohibitive price for regular city water for their lawns the result of this would be the death of these lawns and a dis grace to the city this to say the least is very dis cou raging to the people that are enterprising enough to improve and beautify their homes and thereby the city and is absolutely contrary to the policy of most progressive city administrations improvement of our homes should be encouraged and instead of depriving the present users of the water the system should be extended and given to as many as possible with the supply available this in my opinion would be far more pro pre than to be used for a public park outside the city if it all other conditions were favor able tor for a park the location selected surrounded by sage brush as it is and so far away f from rom view and the business district will un detract from its useful ness for purposes tor for which it is in tended and in the opinion of the writer would never be used ex ten by any great portion of the people our city Is very much more in need of other necessary improve ments such as sewer mains side walks which should be built upon every very important street in the city and improvements of the roads which no doubt would require about all funds available at present or that will be available in the near future it is regret regrettable reg retable ablo that this tion has not been taken up by the public before this ame as the fence has already been purchased but I 1 believe it better to pass upon the project now rather than to expend further funds and offer the tion that perhaps the material may be used by negotiating with our school board tor for the fencing of the high school ground which is badly needed and which could then be tm im proved from time to time as those in authority mas ma deeon advisable this is not written in a spirit of criticism but merely as a protest against the action of our city ad ministration that I 1 believe to be against the best interests of the city and contrary to the wishes of a big majority of the people respectfully ours THEODORE FULLMER mt M t jfe bai |
