For many locals, the best part of the celebration is surprisingly not the watermelon, it is the chance it gives them to see all of those who grew up in the town and later moved away return. City Recorder Conae Black explained, “For the citizens the beat part is all the people who come back so we get to see everyone again. It’s like a community reunion!” As part of the festivities, the town held their Melon Days Queen Competition. The winner was Lydia Dunham, with Courtney Carter as first attendant, Nicki Arnold as second attendant and Brighton Sweeten as Miss Congeniality.
