Show C2 Speed Racers Continued from Page C1. -traptions to ever take the streets were cheered by a crowd of friends and family as they strapped on their helmets for the annual soapbox derby races during Peach Days. The annual event has grown in popularity over the years, and each year a couple of more derby cars enter the race. The cars are often borne from the twisted imagination of the fathers of the young racers, and the question for many of the spectators is not how fast will the derby cars fly down the hill, but will they make it down the hill at all. A member of the Emery County Sheriff’s Office good-naturedly waits at the bottom of the hill with his radar gun to clock the racers as they make their descent. And as the racers made their way down the hill there were in fact a few derby casualties, with one car blowing a bicycle tire and another losing a wheel altogether. With cars that were made from old bicycle parts, old wagon parts or the aforementioned bathtub and wheelbarrow, the only limitation seemed to be the inventor’s imagination, and possibly the availability of old parts to use to create a derby car. Eldon Holmes said he was able to clean out a good deal of junk from his backyard with his derby car that was part bathtub, part roadster with brakes made from a pair of old sneakers. Organizers of the soapbox derby hope to see the event grow in coming years and are open to creating an adult league for those soapbox builders who would like to drive their crazy creations. While the derby was all in good fun and everyone came away a winner, there was definitely an air of competition for some of the racers. Whitney Withers has had bragging rights for the past two years as she was clocked flying down the hill at 22 miles per hour in her soapbox derby car “Lil’ The Emery County Review, Tuesday, September 9, 2008 Withers,” which was wheelbarrow in a previous life. But at the end of this year’s derby she came up a little short in the final race and was beaten by Kody Holmes. Matt Williams came in third in the races and Charlotte Withers came in fourth, but everyone who raced came away with a prize donated by race sponsors Jones Ace Hardware, J&D Auto, Industrial Electric and Desert Thunder Raceway. Racers for this year’s derby included: Ian Albert, Bryan Meccariello, Kelsey Hulse, Brady Jensen, McKay Meccariello, Detmer Winn, Lacie Hulse, Logan Justice, Tia Hulse, Whitney Withers, Matt Williams, Matt Hyatt, Trevor Justice, William Smith, Nate Smith, Teress Ore, Jim Lucas, Kody Holmes and Charlotte Withers. And in case you weren’t able to be at the derby and were still wondering which was faster, a wheelbarrow or a bathtub, it’s the wheelbarrow…at least this year.
