Krista Wright Camryn Cox Cottonwood students take part in Parade of States Kathy Ockey The “Parade of States” was held at Cottonwood Elementary April 30, by Julie Huntington’s fifth grade class. Huntington said it is important for the students to learn about social studies and the states and to learn some interesting information about each state. She said the students are core tested each year on Science, Math and Language Arts but not on Social Studies and this is their opportunity to learn about America. The students choose the state they would like to present and they have a wide variety of reasons for making their choices. Some say it is because they have a family member that lives in a state, or it is one they have visited, or as Camryn Cox said, “I wanted to do that state because they have a lot of horses in it”. The students gathered pertinent information about the state and made a diorama depicting some of the characteristics of the state. They also made a slide show on computers with the information they had learned with the help of computer specialist, Leigh Stilson. Huntington said it took about two weeks to compile the slide show and it consisted of 26 pages. A lot of the information was found on the UEA web site and Huntington said the students learned computer skills they can use throughout their life. They concluded the evening by singing two songs, the first song was a list of the states and the next was the states and capitals. Photos by Kathy Ockey Kenny Monusso M.B. Financial Services, Inc.
