Because our chicken numbers have dwindled due to different circumstances, we decided to brood a whole new flock. Our flock is 22 new baby chicks that we bought at IFA a week ago. They are the Rhode Island breed and they are a pretty little chick. We've had good luck so far and never lost any. I'm sure that within the next few days they will be making a trip to "show and tell" at pre-school. The kids love to hold them and pet them ever so lightly because they are soft and fluffy. In years past, eggs were as good as money. I think it's safe to say that every family in Palmyra had a coop or coops full of chickens. They were a reliable "cash" crop. After taking their weekly cases to the old Utah Poultry plant for processing, they got paid then and there and the checks were usually cashed to buy groceries, a pair of new shoes, a pair of overalls or something basic that the family needed. It is interesting to see the recent interest in having chickens on your own property. Several cities and towns in our local area are passing ordinances allowing citizens to have chickens in the backyard, but first they have to meet several standards and restrictions. The first is no roosters! They are just too eager to announce the beginning of a new day and they like to do it very early-every morning. A word of caution. Raising chickens is not cheap so don't think you are going to save a ton of money. Chickens eat a lot. Like anything else, they have to be managed, fed and watered. But, if you do get some, I think you will find it quite interesting. When you discover that you don't have any eggs in the fridge to complete a recipe that is in progress-no trouble. You just go out and gather the eggs. Good luck! Veterans Council meets $ goal Namon Bills EDITOR The Veterans Council has collected over $23,000 for the additional walls of the Veterans Memorial in the Spanish Fork Cemetery. Glen Bradford, of the Veterans Council, said the money raised will more than cover the cost of the walls. The additional funds will help allay costs associated with setting up the crosses and flags for Memorial Day, when the new walls of the memorial will be officially dedicated. Bradford pointed out that the $23,000 figure does not include donated labor from Fish Construction, Triple T Heating and Cooling and Barber Welding. Fish Construction oversaw the building of the new walls. Triple T donated the metal canopies and lights for the walls. Barber Welding do- Kiwanis Mac/ison's Avenue nated two trailers to help facilitate the set up and takedown of the crosses and flags. Each year as part of the Memorial Day celebration, crosses and flags are placed in the field east of the memorial, honoring each veteran buried in the cemetery. Bradford estimates that this year the number will be around 1,400. He said the new trailers will be a big help in getting everything set up. He said two scouts will participate this year as part of their Eagle projects, and he expressed thanks to Richard Davis, who each year organizes the scouts of his ward to come and help. Bradford said the field of crosses and flags plays an important part of the city's Memorial Day events, and many people search for the name of their father or grandfather on one of the crosses. by "Big Al" and "Farnzy" ONe DAY AT THe PARK SWINGS... T o o c o o t: m o c Courtesy photo VOLUNTEERISM: Don Thomas, Emergency Preparedness Officer for Spanish Fork, recently spoke to the Kiwanis Club. His theme was "volunteerism." He stated that volunteers play a major role in our city. There are currently 34 volunteers on the ambulance crews. There are two crews of three people each that are on duty 24 hours a day. They need to respond within five minutes of a call. Each member starts with four months of intense training to become an EMT, with more training to follow. There are 32 members of the fire department. They receive about 500 calls a year. Each member receives over 200 hours of intensive training. Don encouraged all citizens to take preparedness seriously. "The more prepared we are as individuals and families, the better prepared we are as a community". Doug Lund conducted the meeting.
