Family affair: From FAMILY • A12 Just before earning his wrestling title, Kaleb, who is student body president at SFHS and maintains a 4.0 GPA, was also recognized as USHAA Academic All-State. All-State recognition is awarded to 10 athletes in each division who not only maintain a 3.8 GPA or higher, but who have also demonstrated school and community leadership. Kaleb is a two-time AAU Grand National Champion in both freestyle and folkstyle. Darren and Anya Carter of Spanish Fork were similarly exultant in the accomplishments of their sons. Legend, a Diamond Fork 7th grader, won the middle school title at 80 pounds. At the high school state com- petition, in the 103-pound class, freshman Britain — also an honor student and piano player — became Maple Mountain's first state champion in its inaugural season. In the center of one of the largest and most vocal extended families at the high school state meet, Randy and Ursula Sorensen of Salem celebrated older son Phillip's state championship at 189 pounds. A senior, Phillip will also compete in the High School Senior Nationals on March 25-28 in Virginia Beach, Va. Younger brother Conner, a 7th grader at Diamond Fork, was a finalist in the 119-pound middle school state meet, earning a second-place medal. Tenthgrader Derek is also a varsity starter for Salem Hills. From Mapleton come the sons of Craig and Diane LaMont. Older brother Grant, a freshman competing at 119, finished third after earning multiple state junior high championships. As a sixth grader competing in the junior high states, Taylor won the 75-lb. title as well as Outstanding Wrestler. Both Grant and Taylor are honor students who have placed at the national level. Altogether, the Nebo School District dominated all three state wrestling championships. Nine of the 14 high school state champions were from the Nebo School District, representing all five of the district's high schools: five from Payson ( 1 1 2 - Mitch Brown, 10th; 125 - Zac; 130 - Brock Brown, 12th; 160 - Colton Cannon, 12th; 171-Brady),as well as one each from Maple Mountain (103 - Britain), Salem Hills (189 - Phillip), Spanish Fork (145 - Kaleb) and Springville (215 - Jeff Gueck, 12th). Chris Loveless led Payson to its second consecutive high school state wrestling team championship, while his brother, Jon, led the junior high team to runnerup and the middle school team to the state championship. From the same district, Mapleton's Champion Club - led by Craig LaMont - won the junior high state crown while finishing second to Payson in the middle school states. Spanish Fork finished 8th in the middle school division and 9th in junior high. and his dad the first fatherson duo in school history to win state championships in wrestling. Kaleb's father Jed won a state title in 1985. Maple Mountain coach Justin Judkins was pleased with his team's fourth-place finish. "I was pretty excited about it," said Judkins. "Our guys got in there, wrestled hard." Judkins said his team "tried to take it one match at a time," and "not overlook anybody." Unfortunately, six Maple Mountain wrestlers had to take on each other on the second day of the tournament, which led to some of them being knocked into the consolation bracket and others being knocked out of the tournament. Still, seven Maple Mountain wrestlers placed, and Maple Mountain edged out Uintah for the number four spot. "I felt like we peaked at the right time," said Judkins, who has told his team all year that their showing at tournaments like Reno and Best of the West didn't matter much — what really mattered was how they did at state. The future looks bright for Maple Mountain wrestling, as five of the seven state placers will be returning next year. "We're pretty excited about the next couple of years," said Judkins. Eleven local wrestlers placed in the top six of their weight class at state. Maple Mountain: Britain Carter, 1st place, 103; Austin Rowley, 3rd place, 112; Grant Lamont, 3rd place, 119; Jesse Carlisle, 3rd place, 130; Brandon George, 4th place, 103; Jace Kelly, 4th place, 145; Brennen Hyatt, 4th place, 152 Salem Hills: Phillip Sorensen, 1st place, 189; Spencer Davis, 2nd place, 103 Spanish Fork: Kaleb Ashworth, 1st place, 145; Cody Duncan, 3rd place, 215 Wrestling: From STATE • A12 state championship for the second year in a row.
