CHRISTMAS PERFORMANCE: Oakridge school performs their annual play of "The Christmas Stranger" for the public on Dec. 14, 2009. Springville High's drama department and the BYU Arts department also assisted in making this production a success. Oakridge holds annual Christmas production Oakridge School's Annual Christmas play, "The Christmas Stranger", was presented by Oakridge students and the Springville High School Student Council on Monday, Dec. 14, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Springville High School auditorium. There were more than 25 Springville High School students and 29 Oakridge students who participated or performed in the Christmas play that has been produced for the past four years. Springville High's Drama department took care of the lights and sound and students from the BYU Art Department helped build the set for this years performance. The students practiced for 90 minutes daily for three weeks prior to the performance. The play provides Oakridge students an opportunity to perform and demonstrates each students ability along side typical peers. This is also an opportunity for the students and their families to interact with the community. The high school students gain valuable experience with same age peers that have chal- lenges they themselves don't have and may not understand. This years performance was attended by at least 200 family and friends who applauded and cheered for their students performance. Bee Tanner McKay, an 8th grade student at Spanish Fork Jr. High, won the schoollevel competition of the National Geographic Bee on Dec. 11, 2009 and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level Bee. at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 22nd annual National Geographic Bee. In order to participate in the Bee, eighth graders had to pass a written test with a high qualifying score. There were only 30 seats available for the entire eighth grade so being able to participate is an accomplishment in and of itself. Tanner McKay finished the competition in 1st place with Ian Andrus finishing in 2nd place and Jonathan DeYoung finishing in 3rd place. School winners around the country, including Tanner, will take a written test to be eligible to compete in the slate Geographic Bee on April 9,2010. State winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. to participate in the National Geographic Bee and a chance for a $25,000 scholarship. Each first-grade class had to fill their Polar Express train car and in order to accomplish this, each student had to read at least six books. As a reward for meeting this goal, students got to wear pajamas to school; make Polar Express trains out of HoHo's, starlight mints and chocolate bells; make engineer hats out of paper; and received a bell to wear. That afternoon they got to watch the movie, "Polar Express". It was a great way to celebrate all of their hard work! Pictured standing by the "Polar Reading Express" train are first-grade students from Mrs. Marcy Noorda's class Bevan Jones, Maklain Shepherd, Macy Hullinger, Kami Holt and Tiara Kubalek.
