Eventually that field position resulted in a safety, as Jace Edmunds grounded the ball while being hit in the end zone. This put Spanish Fork on the board with 1:45 left in the first quarter, and the Dons dominated from there on out. Tim Moala scored the first Spanish Fork touchdown on a three-yard run, and the Dons led 8-6 after a failed extra-point attempt. P.J. Inoke made it 15-6 with a 13-yard run with 7:06 remaining in the second quarter. The Dons scored again with 2:48 remaining in the half, then added three more touchdowns through an unusual series of events that included a successful onside kick and an interception by Inoke that he returned for a touchdown. In short, the Dons scored four touchdowns in the final three minutes of the half, to lead 43-6 at halftime. Maple Mountain forced a fumble on the opening kickoff return of the second half, recovering the ball on the Spanish Fork 25 yardline. Two plays later, Jace Edmunds connected with Jase Varney, who made a beautiful catch under coverage for the score. The Dons answered with three TDs of their own in the third to seal the deal at 56-12. Up early, Skyhawks can't hold on vs. Devils Marshall Dunn STAFF WRITER Thursday night at Springville, Salem learned first hand why the Red Devils are one of the top football teams in the stale this year, after being decisively defeated 42-14. The game Thursday seemed to be the tale of two halves, with Salem's half being the first quarter of play, where they scored 14 unanswered points. The next three quarters however, belonged totally and completely to the Devils, who reeled off 42 unanswered points for the blowout win. Salem started out quick from the very first kickoff, with Jason Anderson returning the kick all the way to Springville's 10 yard-line. From there it was-a simple matter of letting Kolapa Wolfgramm pound the ball into the end zone for the score. On Springville's next possession, Salem's defense was able to force a fourth down, and the Devils sent out the punt team. The ensuing snap sailed over the head of the punter, and the Skyhawks were able to recover the ball on the 15 yard-line. Salem however, was unable to capitalize on the mistake, as they couldn't convert on fourth down, giving the ball back the Devils. The Skyhawks' last score came on a trick play towards the end of the first quarter. Quarterback Josh Adams threw a swing pass to Kolapa, who then connected to Josh Warr on a 66-yard scoring pass to put Salem up 14-0. The lead didn't last long as Springville was able score before the first quarter ended, making the score 14-7. On Salem's next possession, Springville forced a three-and-out and then was able to score two plays later on a 21-yard plunge up the middle by Marcus Case. The rest of the game was much of the same; Salem would struggle on offense, due in large part to Springville's ability to contain Josh Adams, and then the Devils would score seemingly at will against the Skyhawk defense. It was a disappointing loss to an otherwise successful season for the Skyhawks, who were able to take third in region in only their second year of existence. Salem now advances to the state playoffs. |
