Spanish Fork Senior Forward, Shea Johnson netted her first hat trick of the season as the Dons bested North Sanpete 5 - 1 , Thursday, Aug. 20. Shandy Elliott a junior midfielder scored two goals, almost achieving this honor herself. In soccer, a hat trick is recorded when one player scores three goals in one game. It is rare that a team will score three goals, let alone one player. "In soccer you don't score a lot, so this is a significant accomplishment, most of the time we are lucky if we get three goals as a team," Johnson said. Johnson is a senior team captain with a GPAof 3.95. Her favorite subject is history. She plays soccer and basketball. She also serves on the student council. Her parents are Dallin and Susan Johnson of Woodland Hills. Shea Johnson celebration when Inoke made an impressive summersault plunge into the end zone, which hampered Chet Harmer's chance of a perfect night on his PAT attempts. With less than a minute later, the Bruins got back on the board with a catchand-run score to close the gap at 27-14. But the Dons answered again this time with a two-yard power run by a bull-dozing Uili Makai for a score. However, the Bruins made it interesting right before halftime with a perfectly placed 20-yard pooch kick, which the ma- roon and gold recovered just inside the white line. But senior LB Michael Stone prevented any threat with an interception to give SF a 35—21 lead at intermission. The Dons held their opponent to one score while crossing the pylon themselves three times in the second half, but Jordunn Mattinson's TD catch was negated due to a penalty. Senior RB Dallas Smith scored on a 26-yard scamper and junior WR Nate Russell hauled in a TD for a score for the final margin. The Tigers received the ball after halftime and opened up with a 40-yard run. Later in the drive, Orem quarterback, Braden Hill, scored on a QB sneak on third down, but once again Josh Adams answered with a pair of rushing TDs. Jordan Robles, the second string QB for the Skyhawks, was able to see some playing time with four minutes left in the third quarter, and on his second play he threw a 19-yard TD. The fourth quarter was scoreless and was high- lighted by Salem's defense, which came up big with four takeaways throughout the game: Jackson Munns had two fumble recoveries; Jordan Robles also had a fumble recovery and Cody Barlow had an interception in the third quarter. At the end of the game, the team had a confidence which was absent from last season's one-win squad, as noted by Adams. "All of our players are a lot more experienced and we have really come together as a team," he said. Dons: From SFHS • A14 sive stand, led by junior LB Tyson Galovich who dropped the QB for an eight-yard sack. Two plays later, Nielsen rolled right before lofting the pigskin to hit a wide open Travis Still in stride for a 79-yard TD strike, and the Dons didn't stop there. Moments later, PJ Inoke took a handoff off right tackle before racing 67 yards down the sideline for the Dons' third unanswered TD of the quarter. Unfortunately, SF was penalized for a touchdown Skyhawks: From SALEM • A14 Tiger's 10 yard-line, but their drive stalled after a fourth down conversion attempt was stopped a yard short. Orem struck first on a 53-yard run midway through the first quarter. That's when Josh Adams took over the game, adding two consecutive touchdowns on 65 and 43 yard runs. The Tigers answered with a field goal before half time, making the score 1410 going into halftime. |
