I'm almost done with my personal menu and calculations and I'm getting so excited to see where I am at and what I need to do to get better prepared. What a feeling! Now on to a subject that emphasizes the importance of at least one reason we need to get our food storage in order - the H1N1 virus (Swine Flu) pandemic, and other calamities that will follow. The one thing about all of this that has really caught my attention, is the five-day government imposed shut down of Mexico City. That" is a very big city and there was a lot of commerce that was halted, as well as wages not being earned or paid. There were a few grocery stores that remained opened for people that didn't have any food stored, but basically Mexico City became a ghost town for five days. Now is a good time to ask yourself how a five-day (or longer) government quarantine would affect your family. Do you have enough food? Could your budget withstand not being, paid for one week? Would you or your family go stir crazy or do you have plans to keep your family busy physically and mentally? Get your food storage figured out and built up! And don't forget your water! Some 4th of £'July moments I remember ^immediately when I think Jof that special day include ^Visiting Valley Forge on *l July 4th and having prominently emphasized the suffering many people went I through to bring our nation tabout. Then, there were the tfireworks that were set off ^beginning at 12:01 a.m. on July 4, in Juneau, Alaska, jwho was pretty proud to t claim to be the first city in tthe United States to have jits fireworks display. They were set off from barges in £|he channel between Juneau ;-iand Douglas, Alaska, and Jvwere especially beautiful £'as they reflected off the waiter and the booming noise !;eehoed back and forth be'jtween the mountains above I;both cities. The evening would close with fireworks that were extra bright under the wide sky that covered that part of our United States. We are blessed to live here! ••• Benjamin was shocked to learn of the death of Mark Richardson, a young man who' grew up here and was so full of life and enthusiasm that he ignited the same feelings in anyone he was with. He lived the same lifestyle as he went on with his adult years. He came from a wonderful family and continued the same things with his own family. Mark suffered a fatal heart attack on Tuesday, June 30,2009, at the Mountain View Hospital leaving behind his wife, Lyn, and children. He was the son of Verla and the late Lynn Richardson and had one brother and five sisters. Funeral services were held on Monday, July 6, in Salem, and burial was in the Benjamin Cemetery. A Trust Fund for his children has been set up at the Far West Bank in Salem for anyone who would like to contribute. We surely extend our sympathy to the Richardson family and any friends of Mark. ••• Two other deaths have occurred that both had connections with Benjamin. Vernon Lundell, who lived in Benjamin in his younger life and attended school here, died on Friday, June 26, 2009, at his home in West Valley City. He still has extended family living here plus boyhood friends whom he has kept close to despite the number of years that had passed. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 1, in West Valley City, with burial in the Benjamin Cemetery. Coincidently, Vernon's brother in law, Lewis Jex. of Spanish Fork, died the same day. He was well known in Benjamin, as he married Buelah Lundell, of Benjamin, and they returned to our community many times for a variety of occasions. Funeral services were held in Spanish Fork, on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, and burial took place in the Benjamin Cemetery. Sympathy goes to the Lundell family and to the friends of Vernon and Lewis. ••• To end this week's column on a happier note we report the weeding of Nathan Mohler and Jessica Morgan, which took place in Provo on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, with a reception in their honor that night. After honeymooning in Jamaica, Nathan and Jessica will make their home in Orem. Nathan is the son of Cory and Nannette Wride. ••• Enjoy the summer fun that is here for us to participate in. h a d s o m e bread,' I thought. Just then I saw a large vessel of broken bread. Sister Baker told me she had sent the bread the day before in a sack to her husband who was working in the canyon. On the way it had fallen from the wagon and was crushed under the wheel. She feared that I would be insulted to offer me the broken bread, but assured me it was perfectly clean. I accepted her offer and what a dinner we had that day! — bread, butter, cheese, radishes and lettuce." I know there are many of you reading this that have gardens. Some of you plant gardens every year, for others this may be the first year. I fit into the last category. I have a small garden and it is doing well. I have zucchini coming and found a small cucumber ' yesterday. I have noticed many gardens around town and here in Palmyra and I know that most gardeners are very good at sharing their fresh produce and so you can relate to the story above. Who knows? Maybe the day will come when we will all become gardeners and will have to produce much of what we eat just like the Pioneers! byBBigAlnand"Farnzyn O2009 Madingo L.L.C, Allan Ols«n and Darrnn Fames TBfettT fast Lane Service HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING Body and Paint; • Service • Furnace Replacements • A/C Add Ons • Green Sticker • Financing OAC We service all makes and models Scheduled maintenance Tune-up-diagnostic scan Oil Change Cooling/Heating Electrical Full suspension * COLLISION REPAIR z We pay up to $ 2 0 0 of your > insurance deductible.
