The Skyhawks could only muster two more runs to leave the score 7-9. In the consolation bracket, Salem faced Park City. Again the Skyhawks jumped out to an early lead and managed to hang on with a 7-6 lead until the seventh, when Park City pulled out three runs for the 9-7 victory, ending Salem's playoff run. John Jackson STAFF WRITER The SF Baseball team entered the opening week of the state tournament with two important home games that would determine their road to a state title. The hometown Dons are the favorite to win the 5A state championship, and took a giant step toward their goal by winning the first two games of the tournament. This allows the Dons to take a day off before resuming their title run at Brent Brown Ballpark on the UVU campus. The Dons welcomed a large crowd to Dons Field to watch them host two teams from up north. The Dons used their overpowering pitching staff to cruise past Skyline and Northridge, both of whom were runners-up in their respective regions. The most disconcerting thing to come out of the two games is the health of an important part of that pitching staff, Chase Castleberry. Castleberry entered the Northridge game and quickly struck out the first batter he faced. The next hitter drilled a liner back to Castleberry that caught him on his throw- Russell Durtschi / Spanish Fork News SAFE AT FIRST: Spanish Fork's Brett Grover beats the throw to first for a single. ing forearm. Castleberry was in obvious pain and a red riser could be seen on his arm. He was taken to the hospital for x-rays, but fortunately for the Dons the late word is that he will be ready to go for the title run this week. Spanish Fork 3 Skyline 1 The saying is good pitching will beat good hitting. If this is the case then the Don's were in great shape as Junior Adam Duke was lights out. Duke began the game by striking out eight of the first nine hitters he faced. It didn't stop there either. For the first six innings, only four of the 18 Skyline hitters even made contact with the ball. All four of them grounded out, which allowed Duke to take a perfect game into the seventh inning. The perfect game ended in the seventh as when Skyline put together three singles, giving them their lone run for the game. The Dons were able to score in their half of the first See DONS • A12 |
