He came to be known as Lhomond since he and his father shared the same first name. Lhomond's father went on a mission shortly after he was born, so he and Martha moved to Salt Lake City to live with her parents. Lhomond became the terror on wheels as he coasted down Gilmer Drive at the age of two. Hyrum returned from his mission and became a school teacher, so Lhomond grew up in Huntingdon, Filmore, Pleasant Grove, and finally Spanish Fork. Lhomond gained four brothers during this time and all live to tell the amazing stories of their childhood together. They are Weston K. (Norma Bearnson), J. Richard (Annie Pinegar), Elwood T. (Barbara Lawrence), and Rowland L. (Cindy Strutt). Lhomond graduated from high school in 1940 and only got two quarters in at Brigham Young University before he was called to active service with the 222nd Field Artillery Battery from Spanish Fork. After basic training he was sent to Hawaii and then to Europe with the 42nd Infantry Division, where he remained until the war ended in 1945. Lhomond was able to come home on leave in September 1944 to marry his first wife, Rhea Money. They had a daughter La Rhea in August 1946. Rhea died from Multiple Sclerosis in 1949 and Lhomond still managed to graduate from the University of Utah that same year with a degree in civil engineering. Lhomond worked for the Utah Bureau of Reclamation, then Lockheed Aircraft until he gained employment with the Corps of Engineers in Sacramento, Calif. He courted and finally married Barbara Sorensen at this time. They decided to make their home in the Bay Area so Lhomond worked for the State of California building bridges and then obtained a job with the Navy in San Bruno, Calif. Marsha Barker Wilburn was left behind to help take care of her grandma and grandpa and bless their lives through the tough times. Tauna and Russ Berry have four boys: Adam (Lyndsey), Jesse (Mellanie), Wesley (Michelle), and Aaron. D. Lhomond and his wife, Colleen Wright, have 11 children: Joshua (Amanda), Christopher, Casandra (Jeff) Chappell, Elizabeth (Brandon) Wallace, Nathan, Matthew, Rachael, John, Katelyn, Emeline and Ryan. Lhomond also has 10 great-grandchildren. Lhomond has always loved music. In high school he played the baritone in the band and the string bass in the orchestra. He played the trumpet and taught himself to play the guitar. He sang in a male group called "Men of Melody," played in a band called the "Melodians," and sang with a barber shop quartet. He spent a lot of years writing music for road shows while working in the MIA. His family formed a quartet and sang in quartet festivals and other various programs and every Christmas Eve they went Christmas caroling. Lhomond (on guitar) and Barbara (on the bass) continued singing and playing their instruments through the years. Lhomond was an active and busy member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in bishoprics, the Young Men organization, and many positions where he used his musical talents. Lhomond has blessed the lives of many with his time and talents. The funeral services for Lhomond were held on Monday, May 18. A graveside was held at the Spanish Fork Cemetery following the services. Condolences may be sent to the family at www. walkerfamily mortuary, com. |
