Show SPANISH FORK WEDNESDAY, MARCH 04, 2009 • A7 Covering what matters most Eagle Scout Banquet Thorrablot: From THORRABLOT • A l folklore. Cutouts of clever illustrations were shown with little tales of elves with a habit of mischief making. A traditional greeting to the elves that was displayed, to be chanted by the housewife on New Year's Eve goes as such: Let those who want to, arrive Let those who want to, leave Let those who want to, stay Without harm to me or mine. Also displayed was information and photos about the puffin, a black-andwhite bird with a bright orange beak and webbed feet native to Iceland. It is known as Lundi in Iceland. A stuffed puffin accompanied the display. A variety of authentic catered foods native to Iceland were presented to the attendees in the buffet, as well as hot dogs and lasagna for the children and those inclined to eat a less adventuresome cuisine. Those wishing for the most unique flavors characteristic to Iceland who also had a little extra cash to spare partook of some foods imported from Iceland. The imported menu consisted of hardfiskur (dried fish, like fish jerky) with butter, hangikjot (smoked lamb), flatbraud (flat bread, a treat when eaten with hangikjot), hrutspungur (pickled lamb parts), and halcarl (cured and preserved shark meat) that possessed a very sharp flavor. These imported goods reflected the food •\ • <• U. ft preparation styles that are tailored to the environment that the Icelanders live in; salting, smoking and pickling amongst other things help flavor and more importantly preserve their vital foodstuffs. Throughout the night door prizes were given away. Some lucky guests received things such as local merchant gift cards, Icelandic music, t-shirts, hardfiskur (the dry fish jerky), dolls, imported Icelandic chocolate (probably a lot tastier than the imported pickled lamb parts), a puffin plushie and a few other assorted Icelandic memorabilia. Everyone was also welcome to take home as a souvenir a krona piece, the silver Icelandic currency worth a little less than an American penny. Those having displayed outstanding love for Iceland and appreciation for such heritage were honored during the assembly. The Icelandic Association of Utah honored Lynette Reynolds (Spanish Fork), Norma Jones (Spanish Fork) and Krege Christensen (Salt Lake City) as 2009 's honorees. An auction also took place to help fund Snorri; a large handmade quilt was sold for $675 to a participant of last year's Snorri. Snorri, the program to which the donation went, is a program that sends participants of Icelandic descent mat have displayed excellent dedication and desire to learn more about their heritage to Iceland for six weeks. There they experience the culture and learn more about their heritage. This year the Association will be able to send three Snorri participants to Iceland. The night was also celebrated with many songs. Barnak6r, a children's choir led by Rhea Jean Hancock, introduced a song called "Iceland",firstsung in English then in Icelandic. This song tells the tale of a girl named Soley who was leaving Iceland for Zion and mourned the loss of her beloved homeland. She cried at the loss of her home, the island, the cliffs and the sea as she bid them farewell. The third time around the guests joined, singing again in English. Other songs, little children's rhymes and one described as the perfect Icelandic roadtrip song, "Porraijrasllin 1866" (Nu er frost a"froni)or "Middle of the Winter" were sung by the guests and directed by a Courtesy photo native Icelander.
