Show -NEWS- B4 • WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1 1 , 2009 Spanish Fork Covering what matters most ALA Geography Bee This winter 5-8 grade history students participated in the Annual National Geography Bee. Finalists moved though the ranks as they answered difficult questions covering the political, physical and cultural geography of the United States and World. Over 25 students made it to the semi-finals and eleven students made it on to the finals which were held at the end of January. The finalists in- cluded: Valerie Fisher, Aaron Frei, Kyle Gowers, Kalen Jones, Kelly Jones, Owen Kennington, Bethany Lamb, Rachel CTConnell, Kylie Pearson, Danny Thacker and David Thompson. After many mind-boggling questions, 7th grade Kylie Pearson came out victorious as the 2009 ALA Geobee Winner. ALA would like to congratulate all who participated in the Geography Bee and give a special thanks to Kara Staheli who organized the event. We would also like to wish Kylie Pearson good luck as she awaits the results of her qualifying test for the State Finals which will be held on April 3, 2009. The girls were each given several awards at their soccer banquet last Friday night. ALA soccer banquet held In honor of the ALA girls soccer team, a banquet was held last Friday evening. The event was catered by Sensuous Sandwiches, along with salads and drinks brought by the team. Each girl voted on which award went to which teammate and every one of them lettered in soccer for playing on the varsity team. At the end of the night, the team awarded a soccer blanket to graduating se- nior, Asia Powell. The team captains then presented tulips and a card to hardworking coach, Jana Clark. The night was fun and the gills deserved a celebration after a good year of soccer. Brockbank's Hansen heroes Brockbank Elementary is happy to announce their Hansen Heroes for the month of January. From Mrs. Janna Runolfson's first-grade class is Cody Herbst. Mrs. Runolfson says, "Cody is a wonderful student and is kind to everyone. He is a hard worker and always follows directions. Cody always has a smile on his face and we are lucky to have him in our class!" Second-grade Hansen Hero is Emma Argyle from Mr. Nathan Wright's class. Mr. Wright says, "Emma is a great student. She always does her best even when what we are doing is difficult. Emma is also very kind and considerate to oth- ers. We love having Emma in our class!" Sadie Bennett is the third-grade Hansen Hero from Mrs. Kathy Moon's class. Mrs. Moon says, "Sadie is a good student and is kind and respectful. She is happy and friendly. Sadie has very neat hand-writing. We love having Sadie in our class!" Fourth-grade Hansen Hero is Quinteney Gardiner from Mr. Terry Oyler's class. Mr. Oyler says, "Quinteney is kind to everyone. Every morning, Quinteney says good morning to her classmates. She notices those who are absent and makes a point to tell them she missed them when they return to the class the next day. She is very thoughtful and kind. Congratulations Quinteney!" AshtonCluff is the fifthgrade Hansen Hero. Ashton is in Mrs. Cynthia Loreen's class and she says, "Ashton is a smart quiet boy who always does his best. He is respectful to everyone. Ashton has a quiet sense of humor and is willing to help anyone. Ashton is awesome!" Sixth-grade Hansen Hero is Gabrielle Heywood from Mr. Ryan Murray's class. Mr. Murray says, "Gabbie is always smiling and has shown to be a great example of getting her work done on time. She is excited about life and all it has to offer.1' Courtesy photo SPELLING: Four boys were the final students involved in the last two rounds. They were, Steven Wilkins, Jackson Lovell, Garrett Griffen and Michael Wilkins. Garrett Griffin, 6th grade, was the final winner. ALA holds final spelling bee Last Thursday 26 ALA students participated in a 4th-8th grade final spelling bee. The students had previously competed in their classrooms where finalists were chosen for this event. The final two rounds had four students involved: Steven Wilkins. Jackson Lovell,, Garrett Griffen and Michael Wilkins. They were narrowed to 2 participants, Garrett and Michael. The other students were able to attend the bee and were cheering the two boys on. As a 4th grader, Michael was amazing with the words that he spelled but finally got disqualified on the word "excise". Garret Griffin won the school spelling bee with the word "apricot". He is a 6th grader from Mrs. Youngs' Class. He will be able to participate in the Daily Herald Spelling bee on March 7, 2009. If he wins that, he could have a chance to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. He told the students that there are several different activities you can do to stay healthy. He also told them not to be afraid to give something new a try and not to get frustrated if they don't succeed the first time. Staying active is a very important key to being fit.
