Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most R.I.P. dance held at SHHS On Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 Salem Hills had their first "RIP" Halloween dance. As planned and carried out by the Salem Hills PTSA, this year's Halloween dance resulted in success for the organization, and many dates to remember. It also proved to be a learning experience for the organization as to how much time and effort goes into planning such a large event. Kiera Cook, student president, said, "It was a little stressful planning [the dance] and carrying it out, but we really came out on top." By planning, she means hours of meetings during lunch and after school, and then hours of decorating, hiring and volunteering. Students responded to the hard work with enthusi- asm as they dressed in their 'Halloween best' and came to the dance. As always, a wide variety of costumes were seen, from all the "Clue" characters, to "Gone with the Wind," to the "Joker" from Batman. The Halloween movie "Corpse Bride" was also shown in the auditorium. The profits were also significant. "The dance brought in enough money, to carry out our financial needs for PTSA the rest of the year," said Cook. Students left the dance full with excitement of Halloween. 'The RIP Dance was so amazingly fun," said student Ashley Ray-Tingler, "and I had an awesome date, which made it all the better." Granting a wish Amy Connelly SHHS On Oct. 30, 2008 the Concert Band of Salem Hills High School held their first performance and wowed the audience with all of their talent. The evening was entitled "Nightmare," and some. of their pieces included works from "The Nightmare before Christmas" and "The Corpse Bride" to set a chilling mood. All of the performers were dressed in costume, with outfits ranging from bananas to Greek goddesses. Even the Concert Band teacher, Mr. Larsen, was dressed up for the occasion. The night also featured a performance from the premier percussion group at the high school, "The Hitmen." They performed three pieces, 2 composed as a group and 1 impromptu in which they used chairs as a musical instrument! To make this evening even more spectacular, all of the proceeds generated that night were donated to the "Make a Wish" program for Sarah Prince. Mr. Larsen commented, "We had a great time, and we look forward to making this an annual event. We are grateful we got to play a part in making Sarah's Wish come true," Sarah's necklaces were also sold that night, raising even more for the Make a Wish program. All in all, the evening was a complete success and a great beginning for the Concert Band program at Salem Hills High.
