Scrapbookers crop for a cure Tayler Mountford STAFF WRITER Saturday May 3, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation held the "Crop for a Cure" fundraiser. Scrapbook connoisseurs young and old came to support the cause at the local Veterans' Memorial building in Spanish Fork. The crafter's came to help each other and to socialize amongst neighbors, friends, and fellow page designers. One patron commented that she had been scrapbooking since December of '07. "I have been scrapbooking for about 17 years," her mother-in-law said. Everyone came with pictures, stencils, stamps, and craft paper in hand to contribute to the fund. "More than 80 percent of every dollar donated goes directly to research," Loni Spendlove, "head scrapper", informed. Mrs. Spendlove has a special place in her heart for the cause; her own son was diagnosed with the disease as a child. There are "at least one to two kids in every elementary [school]" diagnosed with the life altering disease. The disease has also been found to be particularly prone to Caucasian males under 20. When diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, or Type 1 Diabetes, "you have to take insulin every day." These children must endure daily injections of the hormone to keep their blood sugar levels balanced so as to prevent seizures and possible death. "That's why we want to find a cure, because no one likes shots," Spendlove said. Loni Spendlove and her husband will also be serving as co-chairmen for a walk sponsored by JDRF on September 20th at the Scera Park in Orem. Monster 'Concert -V Wednesday, May"7, Nebo School District will celebrate its'first district-wide orchestra "Monster Concert." This free concert will feature 6th-7th grade first year string students in a combined performance of pieces they have been learning this year. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. in the Springville High School gymnasium at 1205 East 900 South. Over 100 students from at least nine schools will perform together in this exciting performance! With such a large number of participants we have a few guidelines to follow which will greatly enhance the performance experience. - . ., », , .. , • Freeze the cheese: From CHEESE • A2 one stick out of the three and grate it really quickly and it is just the right amount. I have also seen packages of crumbled cheese sitting on the shelves - go figure. If you want to have crumbled cheese, but you don't want to pay the high price at the grocery store, I have an easy solution. Freeze it. That's right, all you have to do is to stick your mild or sharp cheddar cheeses into the freezer and freeze it. You then let it thaw in the fridge, and when you go to cut it or grate it, you will find that it will be very crumbly. Not all cheddar cheeses will crumble, it has something to do with the moisture content, but most will. Freezing will not change the taste of the cheese and it is a really good way to preserve it. You can also make hard cheeses last longer by covering them in several layers of wax; I don't think that most of us will do that, but it is an option. And yes, tomorrow I will be eating cheese. I'll talk about fresh vegetables next week.
