Hanks shut out the Lions in five innings of pitching, striking out 1 1 . Dons get two shut-outs Hilarie Orman STAFF WRITER After an uncharacteristic loss to Viewmont, the Dons rebounded with two convincing wins over Payson and Taylorsville. The Dons close out the pre-season with a 10-2 record and now begin the tough Region 4 schedule. The Dons will have their work cut out for them if they want to capture another region title. Check out the other Region 4 teams' pre- season records: Timpanogos 10-1, Pleasant Grove 9-2, Lone Peak 7-3, American Fork 7-3 and Lehi 5-5. This means that even a one-game letdown could take you from the top of the region to out of state playoff contention. The Dons will play a two-game series each week with one of the other region teams. This gives the advantage to teams with more than one dominant pitcher. Hopefully, the many pitchers the Dons currently have will prove this theory to be true. First up is Lehi. Spanish Fork 9 Payson 0 (at SF) Tyler Hanks essentially ended this game in the first inning. Coach Andrews expected the Wolverines would provide the Lady Dons with some of their toughest competition so far this season. Junior Cami Robinson started on the mound for Spanish Fork. Neither team was able to score in the first inning despite getting a runner in scoring position. Hunter's first two batters in the top of the second reached base on singles however in the second and scored the games first run on a bunt. The Lady Dons were unable to score in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third inning the first two Wolverines picked up singles and moved into scoring position with another sacrifice bunt. The number four hitter in the Hunter line up sent a Robinson pitch over the left field fence for a three-run home run, giving the Wolverines a 4-0 lead. The four-run deficit was the largest the Lady Dons have faced all season. In fact, the Dons have trailed in a game only twice all season long, both 2-0 deficits against Springville and Bountiful. Spanish Fork still trailed by four runs as they headed to the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Aly Tingey reached base on a single to center and senior Lindsee Thurgood reached base on a Hunter throwing error. Tingey and Thurgood scored the Dons' first two runs, See SOFTBALL • B12 Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News OUTSTANDING: Natalie Stewart won the 100, 200 and 400m sprints at the Asics Invitational.
