Show -N NE E w s Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 2008 • A7 Memories: Weddings From STOCK SHOW • A6 back then, they didn't have different weight classes to judge the cattle in — they just did them all together. I had to get some other kids to hold my other steers in the line, so of course the steers didn't behave as well for them as they would have done for me." Glen Larsen started a tradition in his family of exhibiting at the livestock show, and mere are now three generations of Larsens who have taken part in the show. Glen's son, Rex, started exhibiting through 4-H under his leader, Willis Hill. Rex can remember going down to the barn to put up decorations for the show with his 4-H club. He said in his day, they tried to get their steers weighing up to about 1,000 pounds for the show. Now, the number to shoot for is more like 1,200 pounds. "The stock show is really like a big beauty contest for the animals," Glen Larsen said. "We really tried to make those cattle beautiful. We put weights on the calves' horns when they first started to grow, so they'd hang down and be more beautiful. The kids would use all kinds of tricks to make those animals look better."* Sterling Argyle described similar procedures. "The kids really groom their animals and make them look great for the show," he said. "They'll take blow dryers and blow-dry the hair until it just shines. And they'll paint the hooves black to make them look more beautiful." Both Sterling Argyle and Glen Larsen praised the stock show as a great opportunity for kids to do something worthwhile that will teach them responsibility and give them ownership and pride in what they've accomplished. "Any time a boy or girl is working hard and feeding those animals, they won't get into trouble doing other things," said Larsen. Both of his daughters-were stock show exhibitors, as well as his son, Rex. Another great benefit of the show is the chance it gives the kids to earn money, which they can then use for a college education or to study some vocation. Glen Larsen's kids all got their college educations with money they earned from exhibiting at the stock show. Many participants also get to travel as they have success on the different levels. Argyle was able to travel to state and national competitions all through high school, compering in different categories of livestock judging, and visiting places he wouldn't have gotten to go to otherwise. While the stock show participants and judges have fond memories of all their years being involved with the show, the community as a whole has Courtesy photos / Rex Larsen FAMILY AFFAIR: Glen Larsen had one of the top five steers at the Utah State Junior Livestock Show in 1943. During the auction at the end of the show, there is a certain base price offered per pound for the beef. Community "boosters" can donate money, which boosts the base price and offers the kids more per pound when they sell their livestock. These boosters often make it possible for the kids to earn two or three-hundred more dollars than they would otherwise have madefromthe sale of their animals. Community involvement also comes from all the stock show leadership. "Every single minute is donated," Argyle explained, "and some of the men who work the show have, volunteered for decades." A look at the records of involvement reveals some 25 men who have each donated from almost 40 years, to 15 years, of service to helping to make the stock show successful, with dozens of others contributing smaller amounts of time. "They do it because they really believe in the cause of helping the youth," said Ar- gyle. "They know that the stock show is really a great opportunity for teaching responsibility and letting the kids learn how to work hard." For Glen Larsen, after 53 years and three generations of being involved with the stock show, he estimated his family has shown about 40 steers there. In 1995 his grandson, Ryan, brought home the prize for Grand Champion Steer, a fitting end to this chapter in his family's involvement. "Finally, after 53 years, we got a judge who knew what he was doing," laughed Larsen.
