Regionals were held Friday and Saturday, January 25-26, at the Lehi Recreation center. The students who achieve the top 24 times will advance to the state swim team competition. Cord Olsen, senior team captain, said, "Region is really exhilaration because of the atmosphere. Everybody is trying to beat their personal best time, so here is a lot of competition. As captain of the team, I try and use that competition to motivate myself and my teammates to do their absolute best." Cord will be participating in the 200 medley relay, the 50 free style, the 200 free style relay and the 100 freestyle. Teammale, Troy Cressman (senior) explained, "When you don't have the pool time necessary to be a state quali- fying team, Regionals is the next best thing. For small teams like us, Regionals is a great opportunity to show everyone what we can really accomplish together.1' Troy will be competing in the 100 freestyle, the breast stroke, and the 200 yard freestyle relay A team. The swim team explained that the support of their friends, families, and schoolmates is key in helping them to accomplish their goals as individuals and as a team, and they appreciate all of the encouragement. Spanish Fork High Drill Team members competed in a competition on Dec. 5, 2008' in Layton. They did extremely well and placed fourth in dance and fifth in hip-hop. Their competition was tough but the team pulled through and placed in both categories. Brooklyn Birch, a member of the team, loves being able to work hard and show off her incredible talents. "It's an amazing feeling to place so well in a competition because it proves to everyone all of the time and effort we put into "our practices. Drill is something 1 have enjoyed ever since I was a kid, and it is my favorite thing to do. I also get to meet a lot of other fun and talented girls along the way. Regions are coming up so this competition was a great way to set us off on the right track," she said. Spanish Fork High' School Drill Team also participated in the Regional Drill Team Competition at Lone Peak High School this past Tuesday. They competed against other drill •teams from schools in our region in order to be eligible to continue on to the State Drill Team Competition. They first preformed their military routine followed by a jazz number and last but not least, a beauty salon novelty number. All of which they took third place in. After competing with all three of their numbers, the judges scored, and Spanish Fork Drill place third overall in Region. Chantel is a sophomore at SFHS and this was her first time participating in Drill Team. "It's fun to work together with a large team and to become unified and dance together. There is a lot of support between the girls. It was just so fun," Chantel Argyle said.'Tve never danced with such a big group before. I like the different varieties of dance that we do and dancing at half time at the basketball games. I love performing in general, especially with all of my friends. The officers are great. I love going to the Drill Team parties to get closer to the team. It's a lot of work, time, and effort but it's all so worth it. Plus State is coming up and that's going to be fun, too!" A generous donation from an anonymous high school parent was made through the Nebo Education Foundation last week to the SFHS Orchestra Booster Club. Allison Hansen, President of the Booster Club, met in December, 2007, with Margaret Larson, the conductor of SFJH and SFHS orchestras, and Sherrie Dunford, conductor of DFJS orchestras, to determine what was most needed for the donation money to go to. Because DFJH is a new junior high, Dunford requested sheet music. Larson requested a portable recording device, and DFJH will receive one as well. Supporting the orchestra programs at the two junior highs in Spanish Fork is a goal of the Booster Club in addition to supporting the high school's. Alison Hansen, principal at Brockbank Elementary, received a grant for the library through the Nebo Education . Foundation. This grant will fund leveled library books for the early grades. "We are continually working to. enlarge and maintain our leveled library at Brockbank. This allows teachers to select books on each "student's individual reading level for instruction. It also allows every student to bring home books to read that are on his/ her level. This grant allows us to enlarge our library of books that would most affect first and second grade students. Our teachers are ecstatic to add these new books to our leveled library," said Hansen, "Thank you Nebo Foundation!" The Nebo Education Foundation meets the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 a.m. to discuss submitted educational grants for students in Nebo School District.
