On another topic, the principal of Mapleton Jr. High and several of her students reported to the School Board on a successful seventh grade day. Designed by a transition team consisting of teachers and counselors, seventh grade day was intended to help seventh grade students adjust to the change from elementary school to junior high. Principal Suzette Kimball noted that this was thefirstyear the junior high had incoming seventh graders who were unfamiliar with secondary school. Mapleton Jr. High was the only school selected to pilot the event. The day before school officially started, seventh grade students showed up for an introduction to junior high. Activities included an assembly introducing student body officers, games emphasizing various school rules and a pizza lunch. At the end of the day, students attended a fair that highlighted the many activities available at the school. Student tody secretary Melissa Orffle related that the majority of concerns coming from the new seventh graders concerned opening lockers. She stated that the student body officers assigned to each group demonstrated how easy it was to operate the lockers, which alleviated their concerns. Students reported that they loved their seventh grade day. They felt that it should become an annual event at all junior high schools in the district.
