Show orts SP Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2007 • B1 Homea 0R16 ,..y Chad Vest STAFF WRITER Spanish Fork entertained a talented Hunter team on homecoming night in front of a packed house. Fans who left early probably wish they had stayed, because the Dons just may be the best fourth quarter team in the state. In two thrilling preseason games on their home turf, the red and gray have amassed 49 unanswered points, all occurring in the fourth quarter of play. While the comeback kids were only a yard shy in their efforts against powerhouse Timpview, they overcame a 17-point fourth quarter deficit in a short span of two minutes to steal the victory from the Wolverines by the score of 34—30. : With little time left, the Dons needed an unbelievable performance in all phases &§f the game and they got just that. Safety Matt Gardner intercepted a pass at midfield ; to begin the improbable comeback. Hunter had built a comfortable lead mostly from an excellent running game by Muka Atiga who had more than 250 yards on the ground. With seven minutes left, it would appear that Hunter was ready to fire up the bus and head back north with an easy win. But Breck Lewis wouldn't let it be as he hit Richard Wilson on a 12-yard scoring strike. Wilson ran a quick slant over the middle and snagged a finger-tip one-handed grab worthy of an NFL highlight reel. With 6:30 left to play, Coach Christensen elected to kick it deep and rely on his tenacious defense. A few plays later, Zac Clayton stripped the ball from a Wolverine back and the Dons recovered. Dallin Naulu provided much of the offensive spark for Spanish Fork throughout the night. Naulu had nine grabs for 122 yards, but none bigger than a 15-yard TD reception. Lewis found the sure-handed Naulu for a 10-yard catch. He eluded several would-be-tacklers into the end-zone to pull within three. On the ensuing kickoff, the Dons went for broke. The special teams unit sold a fake onside kick and the Wolverines bit, hook line and sinker. Many red jerseys were lined up on the right side of the field. Several players shifted to the right just before kickoff. However, Clay "Playmaker" Kerecman remained alone close to the left sideline. Alan Measom then lobbed a pooch kick 25 yards down the left side for a speedy recovery by Kerecman. From there, RB Trevor Randolph took a handoff and did what he does best. The shifty back made four defenders miss and crossed the goal to capture the lead. Kerecman erased any doubt of the comeback victory when he picked off a pass to seal the victory. Whatever pep talk was given at the half, it worked. Another gutsy effort with an improbable victory leads the Don faithful to one conclusion: There's no quit in this team.
