SF native to conduct concert On Saturday, June 16, at 7 p.m. in the Provo Tabernacle, the Portland Boychoir, under the direction of David Thomas, joins Spanish Fork's own Utah Valley Children's Choir in an evening concert of entertaining and family friendly musical selections that range from classical pieces, to sacred and patriotic numbers, to popular songs. David Thomas, a native of Spanish Fork and former director of the Utah Valley Children's Choir, is the artistic director of the Portland Choirs, Inc. The Boychoir is one of five choirs in this organization. Thomas earned degrees ia_. , Vocal Perfo.rTn.ance and Choral Conducting •from "Brigham Young University followed by a doctorate from the RimskyKorsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Russia - music In a city wealthy with choral music, the Boychoir is a rare gem. As Portland's only all boy choral group, they occupy a special niche in choral music. Boy's voices with larger lungs and. vocal cords have the unique ability to produce a sound that girls cannot replicate. Boys voices can scale vocal heights without strain to deliver music that is pure and angelic. The Portland Boychoir is one of only 675 boy choirs world wide, including the famous David Thomas Vienna Boy's Choir. The touring group of 25 alma mater of such music boys, ages 8 to 14, have sung, luminaries as Prokofiev, in the choir for years, many, Shostakovich, and Hcilctz. As the 175 member Utah Valley Children's Choir celebrates its 25 year anniversary, they are thrilled to join their voices in concert with the Portland Boychoir. The boys will be hosted in the homes of the Children's Choir families. The choir members are busy preparing for their own 16 day tour July 5 to New York and Washington, D. C. The Nebo Philharmonic Orchestra will be giving a free chamber concert series this summer, beginning with an opening concert at the Peteetneet Academy in Payson, Wednesday, June 20 at 7 p.m. The concert will feature the Silver Winds flute ensemble performing selected favorites. Master pianist Greta Grimci Wiemer of BYU will perform Chopin's Ballad No. 1 in Gminor. The Restoration String Quartet will perform a variety of pieces, followed by the Nebo Brass Quintet performing a collection of music including classical, pop and broadway show music. Payson's "Norwegian" trumpet soloist, Roger Fjerstad will perform with pianist Greta Wiemer a piccolo trumpet and piano concerto by Telemann. Youth Arts Showcase 0nr Friday, June 15, there will be a Youth Arts Festival Showcase Performance. The Theater Mystery Performance will be at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the Little Theater at the high school. All other classes will be at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the main auditorium. These other classes include Folk and Bluegrass classes, Show Choir classes, Choir/Find your Voice Classes, Creative Dance B, Hip Hop and Creative Writing. There will be visual displays from Arts and Crafts, Young Artists, Beginning Painting and Creative Writing. Kiwanis banquet Nebo Phil auditions We are having Nebo Philharmonic Orchestra auditions for' all orchestra instruments — strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion — June 18-20, and 22, 2007. The Nebo Philharmonic Orchestra is open to adult musicians from all Nebo area communities who are willing to commit to a weekly rehearsal and perform in several concerts per year in various locations throughout the Nebo area. We also need a few substitute musicians who may be able to play only on a limited basis. All orchestra members are asked to audition. We have some exciting concerts planned for the upcoming season. A special thanks to Circle V Meat for providing the meat and to Nebo School District employees for preparing the food.
