Show September 1, 2011 The Garfield County Insider ENTERTAINMENT 8 EVENTS GARFIELD COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS PANGUITCH SPORT SIDELINES Saturday, September 3rd D M g_tML Saturday, September 3rd 1\J \ We have successfully completed our first week of school. I would like to say thank you to the faculties and staffs at each school for their hard work and dedication to educate our students. I know many of them have put in countless hours to make sure we were ready for school to start. Another positive highlight from the first day of school--enrollment numbers are the same as our October 1 count last year. This is very good news for the district because a large part of our funding is based on student enrollment. State Superintendent Larry Shumway and Assistant Superintendent Martell Menlove will be visiting Garfield School District on September 1, 2011. They will begin their visit at Antimony Elementary and then head to the District Office where they will discuss the unique dynamics of the District and have a "question and answer" session with School Board members and school community council groups. They will also be hosting a Regional Superintendent Meeting at the District Office. We appreciate their time in making this visit to our district. Negotiations have wrapped up between the school board and GEA and GSEA. Teacher's contracts will be sent out in the very new future. I would like to thank everyone who has been out to support our "Back to School" nights. We need the support and involvement of parents to have a successful school district. --Superintendent Ben Dalton BY MACK OETTING This is the perfect way to get rid of some of you r clutter, collectibles or "stuff" and make some $$$. On average, four motor vehicle fatalities occur every Labor Day weekend in Utah. While the summer months represent one quarter of the year, approximately 31% of traffic fatalities occur during that time. The Utah Safety Council offers motorists the following safe driving and traveling tips: Do not drink and drive. Always wear your safety belt and buckle your children in an appropriate child safety seat or safety belt for their age and size. Always place children under 13 years of age in the back seat. Never place a rear-facing child restraint in front of a passenger side air bag. If the need arises to use your cell phone while behind the wheel, pull over. Don't text message or make and receive calls until you are no longer driving. Plan ahead. Have your vehicle inspected and tuned, allow plenty of travel time, and bring games and toys to keep children entertained. Fight fatigue by getting plenty of sleep prior to travel and take rest stops every 90 minutes. Slow down and drive the speed limit. Speeding continues to be the number one contributing factor in fatal crashes. During bad weather, slow down and increase your following distance. Pull over and wait out the storm if necessary. Respect other travelers by keeping a safe following distance, merging correctly and using turn signals. Take extra precautions when traveling near large trucks and give them extra driving room. They have larger blind spots and take longer to slow down and stop. The Utah Safety Council encourages everyone to drive safely, have a fun holiday and to remember that whatever the activity, protect yourself and your family by practicing safe habits. The Lady Cats went down to Kanab for a volleyball match and ended up losing in a very close match 3 to 1. All the games were won by fewer than 4 points and the Cats took the third game. Each one of these practice game makes the girls better for their league games. The Ladies played their first home game, last night against Bryce Valley Mustangs and the following week they square off against Enterprise on September 7th and again on the 9th down at Valley. Coaches Norris always has entertaining teams and they are fun to watch. The Cross Country teams got off to a flying start, with the 7th and 8th graders taking first place in the boys and girls races. I am terrible at names but we have real stars in these grades, the Orton girl in the eight grade was a lap ahead of her nearest rival and came in fourth overall. Ion Anderson also took 2nd place in this race and the whole team did really good for their first meet. The Varsity teams also did great with both teams taking second place. Bryce Valley Boys looks like the team to beat in our league and the Wayne girls look awful good with only 5 girls running, they all came in the top ten. One of the Norris twins took 2nd in his race. The next race will be tonight, (September 1) at Piute, this is a sport that any one can do the rest of their lives. The Baseball team had a game that they will remember the rest of their lives. During the game a lighting strike hit a tree out in Centerfield and started it on fire. The game was held up for fifteen minutes, twice till the lighting let up. The Cats won the game 8 to 5, giving the Buffaloes 5 unearned runs. This team is going to be really good and they played Bryce Valley last night here and play Piute there on Friday night (Sept. 2). The following week they travel to Wayne on the 7th and back home against Escalante on the 9th. Panguitch High School sports are a lot of fun, you can purchase season tickets for all the sports for $75 and you can do that at the games or the High School. The medical term for this condition is allergic rhinitis (AR). It affects approximately 20% of Americans, and it is one of the most ACCEPTANCE common chronic medical problems. What Are the Symptoms of AR? AR typically causes several symptoms. First, the nose is congested so badly that you can hardly breathe. Second, the nose runs with a large amount of clear, watery discharge. Nasal congestion and runny nose usually alternate back and forth continually throughout the day. Third, the nose itches, and the source is deep in the nostrils. Frequently, you can only relieve it by pushing the nose upward with great force using the heel of your hand. Fourth, AR causes frequent bouts of sneezing. These sneezes are not deep, loud, and disruptive, but are more commonly quiet, shallow, and almost unheard by those around the patient. They also occur in groups of 10 to 20 sneezes in a row. Fifth, the patient also frequently has eye problems. They include a blue discoloration under the eyes, red/ itchy cycs, and tearing. Is AR the Same as a Cold? AR may appear at first to be a cold, but their causes are different. Viruses cause colds, while AR is caused by allergens such as pollen, mold, dust mites, pet dander, and cigarette smoke. Colds also cause cough and sore throat, but do not usually cause nasal itching, eye problems, or frequent shallow sneezes. This makes a great difference in the treatment of both conditions. While the cold is treated with medications for cough and sore throat, these medications are not useful for AR in most cases. Decongestants may be useful in either condition. However, the standard nonprescription treatments for AR are antihistamines (e.g., Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra, Benadryl, Chlor-Trimeton, Tavist) and intranasal cromolyn sodium (Nasalcrom). There are also many combination products available that contain both an antihistamine and a decongestant. While antihistamines may relieve a runny nose of the cornmon cold, Nasalcrom should not be used for a cold at all. Thus, nonprescription therapy for each condition is quite different. Consult Your Pharmacist for further information on nonprescription treatment. 1.)aric.4:tch jrau (‘) tior Steve Marshall Shaunna Rechsteiner Tim Smith Pharmacists Help If nonprescription products do not seem to help your problem, you may wish to explore other options. The most important step in dealing with AR is to get professional help. To do this, it is best to make an appointment with an allergist, a physician who is board-certified in allergy identification. You can find the allergist closest to you by consulting the Web site of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology (www.acaai.org/allergist/ Pages/locate_an_allergist.aspx). You should consider visiting physician practitioners who appear on this list in preference to those who do not. Treatment may begin with allergen testing to identify what you are allergic to, followed by trials of prescription medications, such as nasal sprays and oral tablets. Follow the direction, on your prescription exactly. Getting Professional Can AR Be Cured? Unfortunately, AR is not "curably like many other medical conditions, although the attacks may lessen with time. While symptom, can be relieved somewhat by certain medications and by injections (i.e., allergy shots), AR is a chronic condition that is prone to recurrence. The direct approach of attempting to make your spouse change is doomed to failure. By changing yourself you increase the chances that your spouse will follow your example. Praise your spouse as soon as you see even a small change in the right direction. When you show appreciation for even a small change in the right direction it can inspire them to be even better. They will want to live up to your praise. Even if your spouse isn't changing anything, find something else to praise them for. A chain reaction can soon begin. In summary, change yourself first. Second, accept your spouse as they are. Third, shower them with love and praise. Praise, love and acceptance will bring about more change in a person than will force or coercion. The challenge for this week is to make a strategic plan for how you will change in order to have a positive impact on your relationship. 2004 (c) The National Healthy Marriage Institute LLC |
