Panguitch Flag Pin I was touring a British naval vessel, wearing my American flag lapel pin. As I asked the tour guide a question, he called out, "Sir, you are in distress!" I was greatly confused, until he pointed out that the flag on my lapel was upside down, the naval symbol for a ship in distress. I fumbled with the sticky clasp for a moment, but was only able to turn the flag 90 degrees. "Ah," he said sternly, "now you're being boarded by pirates." Marksman One of the best marksmen in the FBI was passing through a small town. Everywhere he saw evidence of the most amazing shooting. On trees, on walls, and on fences there were numerous bull's-eyes with the bullet hole in dead center. The FBI man asked one of the townsmen if he could meet the person responsible for this wonderful marksmanship. The man turned out to be the village idiot. "This is the best marksmanship I have ever seen," said the FBI man. "How in the world do you do it?" "Nothing to it," was the reply. "I shoot first and draw the circles afterward." Before rushing to work, I prepared a casserole for that evening's dinner and put it in the fridge. As I turned to leave, I told my son to stick it in the oven when he got home from school. "Make sure to put it in at 350," I said. "Sorry, can't," he replied. "I don't get home until quarter after four." Shaking Hands "Doctor, you've got to help me - I just can't stop my hands from shaking!" "Do you drink a lot of coffee?" "Not really - I spill most of it!" ADVERTISE IN THE INSIDER Calr676:2621 trigaTelails. It Makes Sense...By Veda Hale There is one study that has been going on for eighty years. Probably the longest study to ever happen. 1500 people have been followed in their lives for that long and now the findings can be looked at to see if we can learn why some lived longer than others. I was surprised at the conclusions. I would have said that those who had happy marriages, low stress, a pet or good genes would be the longest living. Good things to have, but not the right answer as to what is the number one reason for long life. The answer about what was the most important factor turned out to be "conscientiousness". I had to ponder that for a while. I looked up the word "conscientiousness" to see better what it means. "Conscientiousness is a tendency to show selfdiscipline, act dutifully, and aim for achievement against measures or outside expectations. The trait shows a preference for planned rather than spontaneous behavior. It influences the way in which we control, regulate, and direct our impulses." Another thing to come out of this study is just how important early childhood is. A child living a serious disruptive life, as one who's parents divorce or one pushed too early into a learning situation where they aren't mature enough to succeed, was shown to loose 5 years from their expected life span. That is sad, when we consider how many children come from divorced homes. It makes sense to consider these findings. However, I would hate to see creativity and spontaneity squelched. Life wouldn't be as much fun. What do you think? (6 ) I Now why does that lead to a better chance of living longer? Sounds a little boring maybe. But after some time I think I can understand better why this personality trait leads to a better chance of living longer. A conscientiousness person doesn't do risky things. He or she likely wouldn't smoke or abuse drugs and would probably make wise eating choices as well as wise choices for friends and relationships. Liking order, they would not waste a lot of time or energy looking for misplaced things and would not do anything against their conscience, so would reap the rewards of honesty and trustworthiness. They would take responsibility for living up to their commitments, be it school assignments or marriage vows. Well, so be it.
