Twentysix volunteers from all over southern Utah met in the Park and were assigned areas to count birds in our assigned circle. Along with them, Bryce Valley Elementary had over 150 students counting and Panguitch Elementary added 256 more students to the count. Over 2,000 birds and 47 species were counted during the day and throughout the week. Prior to the Christmas Bird Count, Sarah Haas and Education Outreach Specialist Marilyn Bulkley traveled to each of the schools to introduce the students to the birds in their area. An assembly on 10 different common birds along with in-class lessons on "Bird Beaks Adaptations" was presented. Sarah Haas stated: "The Christmas Bird Count is an excellent opportunity for children to develop observation skills and learn about nature. Bryce Canyon National Park is very excited to have shared this learning experience with your students. We are looking forward to next year's bird count with new and exciting activities planned for all the school age students." An added bonus for the students at the schools, was the guest speaker Chris Parish of the Peregrine Fund in Arizona. He presented an assembly in all the schools about a remarkable bird---the endangered California Condor. We were glad that the students had the opportunity to learn about this incredibly majestic, yet very vulnerable, species. Marilyn Bulkley would like to say: "Thanks to all the teachers and students for all their hard work on this project. The information you collected was very important in helping us learn more about the birds in our area."
