Show December 30, 2010 The Garfield County Insider WILDLIFE PROJECTS STOPPED ON BLM LANDS Y \,,) ) ,(, ,•. As I read the recent edition of Redrock Wilderness, the Newsletter of the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA), it gave me, and would others who love Utah and its wildlife, some real heartburn. It's amazing that an organization that prides itself on caring so much for our Utah landscape, could brag about sabotaging projects meant to provide healthy habitat to many of our important wildlife species. The article relates the SUWA success in stopping the "deforestation" of 50,000 acres in the Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument (GSENM). Several other Utah projects are also being protested, including one on the Henry Mountains of Garfield County. The principle project in question encompassed several thousand acres in the Skutumpah Terrace (Upper Kanab Creek) area of Kane County. It is also the historical home to the most southern remnant population of Greater Sage Grouse in North America. In a Wildlife Report for the GSENM wrote in 2005, I expressed my concern for the loss of sage grouse habitat in the Skutumpah area, since they have been proposed for listing as an endangered species. The historical plant community consisting of sagebrush, grass and forbs has been replaced by extensive encroachment of pinyon pine and Utah juniper trees (P/J). Plant ecologists say the P/J forests in the West have increased by nearly 1000% since 1870. Overgrazing by early settlers and especially by large commercial livestock companies, and subsequent fire control, started the trend that now needs aggressive remedial projects to try and restore, to some degree, the productive vegetative plant communities that existed during the time of settlement. Most of the area is now managed, as best as possible, based on the present plants available. A few areas still have large overgrowth sagebrush. However, most of the upland terraces that were once a sagebrush/ grassland/forb plant community are now almost all P/J trees, with nearly all understory plants dead or dying. Loss of ground cover plants led to rampant erosion as evidenced now by large gullies. The water table is much lower than in previous times, thus drying the whole area. What are the sage grouse, deer, rabbits, or anything else expected to now live on? They have trees for some shelter, but that is about all. SUWA had very negative comments on the proposed nearby Alton Coal Mine, partly because of its affect on the sage grouse in the area. Yet down the road a bit in the Skutumpah area, they high-five each other on 200 North 400 East • Panguitch, Utah • 676-8811 www.garfieldmemorial.org Family Practice Dr. Richard Birch Dr. Todd Mooney Becky Roberts, FNP Tim Dennis, PA-C Dr. Mitchell Miller Speech Therapy Flora Howard Anesthesiology Lewis Barney, CRNA Certified Nurse Midwife DeAnn Brown, CNM VISITING SPECIALISTS FOR JANUARY 2011 Dr. Robert Pearson Dr. Kevin Walsh Dr. Randy Delcore Dr. Eric Maxwell Dr. Mark Hansen Dr. Brad Webb Dr. Robert Nakken 11 5 13 12, 26 20 3, 17 27 Ear, Nose Throat Cardiologist Orthopedist Audiologist Gen. So when I read that SUWA personnel had visited the site and found a "perfectly healthy ecosystem" and that the area was being "deforested", their true motive seemed to show its ugly face. That is, any human activity on undeveloped lands may compromise future wilderness designation. No matter that the area is unproductive and various wildlife and plant species are suffering. Also, if any cows are or will be using the area, the project must really be bad. So let the sage grouse go somewhere else, wherever that is. It's all about wilderness. No other value can compare, even if the area remains degraded, unproductive to wildlife and livestock, and an eyesore to many of us that vision a much different, and more beautiful, landscape. The recent news announcement that an additional 6 million acres of Utah may also become off limits to sensible vegetation management, water developments, or whatever else is needed to make Utah lands productive to their natural potential, must make hard-core wildernesseverywhere advocates ecstatic. Hopefully, educated and knowledgeable BLM managers and administrators will stand up to this SUWA nonsense and have the courage to aggressively educate decision-makers as to proper, sensible, scientific land management practices. The BLM lands of Southern Utah and elsewhere are the lifeblood of our culture and livelihood. They must be managed for the sensible conservation of their potential, for all people and wild things, not for the narrow agenda of a few.
