Show Page December 30, 201 EIMAP/AllegYtAl by Vicki D. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com By: Mack Oetting — E-mail: mackoetting @gmail.com December 21st was the first day of winter and it rained and rained and rained. It rained 3 or 4 days or was it a month? Well global warming isn't all that bad, all that rain sure beat 3 or 4" feet of snow. I find it strange that the first day of winter has the shortest daylight of the year, and from there we gain two minute of daylight each day (one minute in the morning and one in the evening) till the start of the first day of summer, when the process reverses. On the last day of school, before the Christmas Holidays the students at the Middle and High Schools had a fund raiser for the Sub for Santa program. They raised a considerable amount of money. Santa would like to thank the Faculty that has instilled into the Students the power of giving. Many groups gave up the traditional Christmas exchange gifts and gave to Sub for Santa instead. Santa's job is year around, because clothing can be bought less expensive at certain times of the year. Santa would like to thank all of organizations, groups and individuals that made this one of the most successful Christmas for many in our community. I spend a lot of print on the virtues of the Middle and High Schools, but it doesn't start there. I suppose because I'm in the elementary school weekly, that it is easy to take them for granted, this all starts in Head Start, Preschool and Kindergarten, all the way up to the 6th grade. These teachers are remarkable it is non stop learning, from one subject to another. Their prep hour is after school or at home, teachers spend many extra hours preparing for the next day. The students start on basic geometry in the second grade, and they work on the computers everyday. The other day I watched one of the teachers working her magic on her smart board teaching math; what an amazing tool this board is. There is a reading program that works very well with the students that needs help and it starts in Kindergarten. These teachers have all of the best up to date learning tools out there. While the rest of the Country worries about how poorly our students are doing compared to the rest of the world, they should come to Panguitch and model the education system after what we have here. Last week I said that Cindy Peterson who got married was Donna Peterson's daughter, she is Kathy Petersons daughter. Sony folks, but names are not my forte. The City's Main Street looked so festive this year. Thanks city workers. I think our lamp posts are the best! Both entrances to the city are fantastic! The Panguitch Lions Club had donated back into the Community over $13,000. Their usual helping hand is with the Easter Egg Hunt, FCCLA, Girl's State, two College Scholarships, Indian Pow wow and Sub for Santa. They helped out on some really big projects around town. The Lions completed their $10,000 obligations to the Garfield County Hospital's remodeling with a $2,500 dollar check, $4,000 towards the Skateboard Park, and $2.000 towards the Quilt Walk Park. The members of the Lions Club are dedicated people who work hard to help in any way to make Panguitch a great place to live. All of money comes from our Breakfast in the summer, demolition derby and the Birthday Calendar, from your contributions, thank you all. By the way the Birthday Calendars are in, call if you haven't gotten yours. (676-2418). There is work going on down at the Alton Coal mine. They are removing 50' of soil from on top of the coal. They are hoping to be hauling coal by the end February. The rumor is that they will be going to Delta with the coal. Delta is a twelve hour turn around and that will mean that there will two thirds less traffic. I believe they will be looking for drivers, so if you like to get one of these jobs; you can get the training over in Cedar at the South West Applied Technology College. They have two Semis that you train on. Truck drivers are always in demand, and it is a good paying job. We sure did and I am still loving the lights around town. The other day on TV someone was reporting that there was a group petitioning for all Christmas lights to be taken down because they were harmful to the environment. Baloney. If you want to celebrate your way that is all good and fine, but leave the lights, the spirit, and the celebration of CHRISTMAS up to each individual. The main reason for Christmas happened over 2000 years ago with the birth of our Savior. We have the right to do Christmas our own way and if we chose to follow the Savior that is our right as American citizens or not. We send out condolences to the Rex Sandberg family on his passing. He will be missed and we want the family to know that his great man is in our thoughts and prayers. Bryce Canyon City got the grant to build their Fire Station. It will have training rooms, offices, kitchen, eight bays and lots of storage. It is an exciting event and construction will begin in the spring. The Tropic Ward Choir entertained us and did a beautiful job. They have practiced for this day and you could tell. They were narrated by Earl Slack and their sound was wonderful. Thank you Choir under the direction of Marie Pollock. December 31st will be the New Year's party at Ebenezer's Barn and Grill from 9:00 to 12:30 at night. There will be music and lots of fun. It is a family affair so come and enjoy the evening and celebrate the coming of 2011. Cannonville Ward had Megan Cottam and her Violin students perform today and they were great. Joe Thompson and Steve Beagley both sang and did a good job. It was a very entertaining program for those in attendance. In Henrieville it was the 4)1ET ei44417 Tite tIOYAt, 389 N. There will be entertainment, dancing, blow up rides for the kids, a money pit (my favorite), bingo and all the fun you can cram into one evening. This is a family affair and will run from 7pm to 10:30pm. The cost is $25.00 for immediate family and $ 5.00 for singles. See ya there! Keep a few minutes available on January 1st for Jake Bagnell's Ninetieth Birthday. It will be held at the Senior Citizens Center from 11 am till 3:00 pm. Please no gifts, just come an enjoy some light refreshments. The Insider accidently deleted the end of last weeks article about Maloy Dodds and Janice Hatch. This is the end that got cut off. Janice Hatch has brought learning out of the dark ages and has brought education through her programs to Garfield County to the highest level. In my humble opinion I don't believe kids are any smarter to day than in my day. However they have the opportunities to learn and to succeed, with the tools in this day's world like no other time, thanks to Educators like Janice. Thank You Commissioner Maloy Dodds for all that you have done to make Panguitch the best place to live anywhere. Thank You Janice Hatch for what you have done to give my Granddaughter and her friends the opportunity to succeed at the College, many who have complete there college education and some who are working on higher degrees. As the year winds down we celebrate God's greatest gift, His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. This gift offers hope, cleansing and purpose for this life. It is a gift that keeps on giving into eternity, never losing it value; it is the same now as it was 2,000 years ago. It is a gift that never wears out and fits all. It is the gift of Eternal Life.
