Show Page 201 September roThMEL.,.. IITCH J By: Mack Oettinii— E - Oh what a joy it is to live in Panguitch! This last week many miracles happened that helped make the dedication of the Quilt Walk Park on Saturday possible. Tuesday was a dreary day with off and on rain, but every thing came off with wonderful timing. First R&R welding came with the arch, this arch was designed by Claudia Crump and Bob Burton and Bob did all of the metal on the arch. Bob is a real artist, who has done many signs around Panguitch, including the Social Hall and the Old Fire Station. While many were raking the top soil that had been brought in, (I can't say enough about the top soil, it had been screened and no rock) the benches came in from St. George. Arlin Sawyer showed up with the crane and was able to place all seven benches with only having to move a couple of times. Up drove Tom Simkins with three beautiful, pure white marble rocks that were so heavy that they needed a crane to place them, Tom got the stones out by Minersville. Arlin was right there to place them next to the statue's quilt. On Wednesday came the sod and boy did I order way too much or what? I really think someone was looking out for us; many people were in need of sod for their new houses. Debie Hatch bought much of the overage and laid it herself, boy is she in shape. Laying that much sod was tough, but one of the workers was Wendy Eyres and she took a break to make lunch for her husband Brady. Brady brought her back and saw how short handed we were, he went to the hospital and asked if anyone was not busy that we could use some j: nordalikkiwk4okaiixoui help. After three hours I looked back an figured it would take us another day to finish, but up showed the Calvary ( Brady, Alberto, Houston, and others) and saved the day, we were done in an hour. Many thanks to all of those that helped. Thursday Joe Thompson concrete crew finished of the last of the cement work, his crew did all of the hard scape. Friday the sod was finally finished and the ladies finished off the sealer on the cement. The park was ready for the dedication on Saturday. There were so many people to thank for all the work that went into this beautiful creation, that I would fill up the whole paper, God bless all of you and thank so much for making this dream come true. On Saturday the weather was nice and warm and there was a really big crowd. Presidents Dalton and President Torgerson gave the opening and closing prayers and President John Yardley dedicated the Statue and Park. Pat, Claudia and Elaine all spoke of the history of the park. Claudia introduced the sculptor Stan Johnson and his Wife Polly, what a work of art they created. The cast from the Quilt Walk Play sang two songs and Claudia gave out quilts to seven men who worked on the park. Many of those in the crowd were from Parowan and really loved the park. Dessert was apple crisps and ice cream made by the many women in town. Hiding in the background and a strong volunteer for the Quilt Walk festival was Rick and Karen Swanger. Many thanks to him, Karen, and musical equipment. Pat learned of the Quilt Walk story when she was teaching in Fuller- VISIT COLORADO, GET A FREE HAT! Depending on weather conditions, either burn may need to be postponed into October. The primary objective of these prescribed fires is to reduce wildland fire hazards to park and forest visitors and adjoining private lands. The park and surrounding forest lands are scheduled to remain open during this prescribed fire with the exception of some areas of being closed for short periods. The Dave's Hollow Prescribed Fire will be begin early next week covering 220 acres along the west side of the park's entrance road from entrance station to the northern boundary . Scheduled burning around Sunset Campground is planned for approximately September 27th covering 1,100 acres along the campground's perimeter extending onto the Dixie National Forest. Sunset Campground will be closed for the season starting on September 27th. An open house meeting will be held on Monday, September 13 at Ruby's Inn (near the entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park) from 4:30 — 6:30 pm. Park and forest officials will be on hand to discuss their respective prescribed fire programs and specific details of both the Dave's Hollow and Sunset Prescribed Burn. At times, visitors to the park and forest and area residents will see or smell smoke from the fires. Smoke on park and forest roadways may be a hazard and scenic visibility may be reduced in certain areas. At night residents in the Bryce Valley region may experience some smoke because of atmospheric inversions. The lack of fire on much of our public lands, mainly due to past suppression efforts, have contributed to JD FS high fuel accumulations and a change in forest structure. Prescribed fire is a way to reverse these changes brought on by fire exclusion. The policy of using fire as a tool will help decrease risks to life, property and resources. These burns will be conducted safely with the health of area residents, visitors and wildland fire fighters at the forefront of operations. Burning will only be allowed under certain weather and fuel moisture conditions. The future benefits of restoring the health of the ecosystem and reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfires and threats to developed areas is vital to maintaining the integrity of the resources in the park and forest. By improving wildlife habitat and forest health these burns will sustain long-term appeal to the national and international visiting public and the economic benefits they bring to the tourism industry in the area.
